Authorities continue air-bag death investigation EDMONTON Transport Canada is continuing to conduct an investigation into the death last summer of a six-yearold girl fatally injured by a van's air bag. The van's driver, Ernest Wilson, 56, of Edmonton, was recently given a $57 ticket for driving too close behind another vehicle. He can pay the fine or fight the charge in court March 6. Samantha Duma had been riding in the front passenger seat of his Dodge Caravan when it rear-ended another car Aug.

11outside Commonwealth Stadium on Aug. 11. It was only a minor accident and the Samantha was wearing a seat-belt but she received critical head injuries when the van's front air bags deployed. She was declared brain-dead and taken off life support two days later. The bags, which can explode out of dashboards at speeds up to 300 have killed two other children and five adults in Canada.

The province requires all drivers to comply with safety recommendations and place children under age 12 in back seats, though the law only requires children under age six to be in back seats. Union tries to organize workers at Syncrude FORT MCMURRAY A national union has started dan organizing drive at Syncrude, a huge oilsands company that employs 2,000 workers near Fort Mc-' Murray. "The main issue is fairness, the way people are treated," said Bill Kolba, an organizer with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada. Workers are complaining of inconsistencies between departments and say. newer employees receive different benefits and wages than more senior staff, Kolba said Tuesday.

Wages are also an issue, since they have failed to keep up with rapidly rising housing costs in Fort McMurray's boom-town economy, he said. Syncrude president Jim Carter said the oilsands giant has survived other union organizing drives since it opened it 1978. "Over the last 23 years of Syncrude's operation, there have been 10 organizing drives, none of which has been successful," Carter said. "I would expect that this has some-' thing to do with the union wanting to grow and expand and wanting to have some control over a large part of Canada's crude oil production." Carter said Syncrude regularly reviews its wages and benefits with other major companies and consistently ends up in first or second spot. Moratorium on gaming extended pending review EDMONTON The Alberta government is extending its moratorium on gaming industry expansion for another month pending a final review of new rules, Gaming Minister Ron Stevens said Tuesday.

The two-year-old freeze will remain until the end of February. "It is time to lift it and see what happens," Stevens said in an interview. "But we have to have the rules in place. We want to make sure we do it right rather than just rushing ahead." Off-road vehicle users pack Bighorn meeting EDMONTON Environmentalists hoping to gain support Tuesday for legislated protection of the Bighorn Wildland area were met instead by off-road vehicle users. The Alberta Wilderness Association had called a meeting at the Stanley Milner library to warn 1 people the provincial government had formed an advisory committee to look into uses of the Bighorn Wildland Recreation Area.

They feared the land, on the eastern border of Jasper and Banff national parks, will be opened up to industry and off-road vehicle users. The area is home to wildlife and the source of drinking water for many communities. The association had hoped people at the forum would support its push to have the park protected under legislation. Instead, they met stiff opposition to any proposal prohibiting off-road vehicles in the area. About 90 per cent of the estimated 160 people were ardent off-road vehicle users.

Gordon Canfield, a director of the Alberta Off-Highway Vehicle Association, said the group has lost too many battles and is afraid of losing more recreation areas. Legislature resumes sitting on Feb. 26 EDMONTON The spring sitting of the Alberta legislature begins Feb. 26, Government House Leader Dave Hancock said Tuesday. Albertans can expect "a full and productive" session which will include "lively debate on the issues that are important to Albertans," Hancock said in a news release.

The provincial budget is to be tabled in mid-March. Please! -Recycle this paper EDMONTON JOURNAL -050854.
