In the what she is, must look at tuege States the absence of servile labor has ren ed such a class country gentlemen impossibte- The farmers must bo their own in every thing, and bavo consequently no opportunity of intellectual culture, in the South, the agncul.u-rists are not only thoroughly acquainted with their vocation practically, but have wealth and leisure for the cultivation of the mind.

Tliey are mostly educated men, of bland and social manners, an well as of splendid physical development. A York paper recently remarked that a robust and healthy looking mau in tho streets of that city is a thing rarely to be met with. Here, a dclicato looking man is tho exception. Northern energy, refinement and intellect are generally concentrated in the towns. Here they are diffused through the country.

No man can get an idea of Virginia character who simply visits her towns, unless he does so during tho period of an AGRICULTURAL 1 AIR. Free Love. According to the Now llaven ltegister, "the Vroe Love Doctrine is widely disseminated among the peoplo of New York, especially among the higher Such a statement as this seems Incredible. When wo como to reflect, however, what the "higher classes" of New York society arc, there is nothing so very astonishing in the asser Kan. A broad distinction exists between the "higher" and tho better classes of New York Society.

The former are mostly vulgar upstarts, who have risen from the very dregs of the community, by dint of possessing tho faculty of making money In a Southern State, all the gold which rile and vicious men ctuld accumulate, would never gild over their moral deformities. In New York, wealth affords the key to the highest station, and atones for tho absenco of education, morals and manners. Consequently, whilst the "higher classes" of New York, abound in purple and fine linen, they are, with few exceptions, as Inherently vulgar and depraved as the people of tho "Five Points." It la not astonishing that those who havo long adopted tho practice of Kroo Love, should also embrace its theory. But it would be doing grow injustice to judge New York, a city of nix hundred thousand people, hy its "upper ten." Tho better classes of New- York, comprised of a multitude of educated, refined and warmhearted people, have surely enough to guffer from tho annoyance of the upstarts who thrust them to tho wall, without being held responsible for their vices and follies. New York, as a whole, is no inoro a city of Free Love than it is of Free Soil, and every one knows that while tho rural districts, and the New Kngland cities are thoroughly contaminated with abolitionism, New York is tho moat national and loyal of American cities.

(General and the I'nion. Wc gave an extract yesterday from a letter of a Northern writer, who says that in a late interview with Gen. Cam, that venerable statesman spoke in foreboding language of our national prospects, and is strong in tho belief that disunion will yet carry its banners over tho liopublic." It is Impossible to say whether General Cass ever uttered such a sentiment. But, if not "strong in the belief" that disunion will yet prevail, thoro are thousands of wise and moderate men in every section of tho eonntry who share tho gloomy "forebodings" of Gen. Cass.

Tho political horizon is covered with angry clouds. The next session of Congress is looked forward to with profound solicitude. But "never despair of the Republic:" Let patriots hope on, till the last, and then bo able to say, with a clear conscience, that their skirts are clear of all responsibility for the terrible Bnirlinh Policy. Tho arts of Kngland in these latter times are more successful than her arms. Whilst her soldiers in the Kast add no lustre to her historic renown, her diplomacy In the West seems about to achieve a triumph which will retrieve the greatest blunder of her career as an unjust and oppressive policy which deprived her of America.

We lately published an extract from the lettor of au intelligent Amercan gentleman abroad to the National Intelligencer, settingforth that the opinion is freely expressed in Kngland and on the continent that thore will be a grand blow up at the next session of Congress, which will be followed in one or two years by the dissolution of the Union, and that then Kngland will take the South uuder her protection. Hero, we have in few words, the whole policy which we have always contended, governed the counsels of Kngland in relation to this country. Ascertain what are the intere-ts of a nation, and it is not difficult to discover her prin eiples Of action. It is the interest of Knplanil to get rid of that formidable commercial and manufacturing the I'nited States, and, tillable to conquer hsf" she has used the subject of abolition to SNlract and divide our people, so that we may ultimately fall a prey to our own dissensions. Henry J. Raymond and others. (Commissioners of the Council Fund,) Mitchell decided that the motion for an injunction must bo denied, with costs, on the ground that whether the law, authorizing the State Loan of £1,500,000, is unconstitutional or not, an injunction is not the proper remedy. Mr. Corastock of Princo Edward, Va addressed the Society. It is noted, as one of the interesting incidents of the present canvass, and illustrative of tho "moral agencios" at work, that the notorious bruiser, Morrissey, ono of the parties indicted for tho murder of Bill Poole, is very active in steps to sccuro the election of Police Justice in tho sixth judicial district. Tho Mayor to-day addressed a timely communication to the Chief of Police, calling upon him to be extra vigilant from now until tho election is over, with a view to prcsorve law and to see to it that nono of his subordinates identify themselves with political clubs or associations of any kind. The recent attack on the American procession is creating much talk, and it is feared that in our coming election the Louisville riots may bo re-euacted.

James 'Warren, formerly a clerk for Oeo. Law, committed suicide yesterday. 110 was formerly well off but had becomo much reduced. Ho had been arretted by a friond, who had loaned him some money, and was unablo to bear tho idea of imprisonment Thk Kirk and Loss of Lifk, by the bin ning of the. large satinet factory at Southboro', a day or two ago, has already been briefly mentioned Tho loss of property is estimated at insurance $30,000.

There were nearly 100 operatives in tho factory when the Are broke out, and to save their lives they were compelled to jump out of the windows. The lioston Traveller says Jsv means of an iron ladder, many descended in safety to the ground, but one of the" female who had got part way down, became bewildered, and stopped, rendering it extremely difficult, if not impossible, under the circumstances, for anv ono to pass her. Maria Carter, the girl who was killed, was in the third story when her hair and clothes took fire She leaped madly from the window, and was so much injured that sho died in two hours afterwards. Miss Carter wag 16 or 17 years of age. Mary Murphy, in leaping broke her bark, and is not expected to recover.

Mr. McOce, formerly of Dorchester, aged about 55 years, jumped "from the fourth story, a distance of" 50 feet from the ground. He struck upon ono arm, which was badly shattered, but otherwise received no material'injury. Two or three other operatives in the mill were severely injured. News gives an account of a collision between the Cunard steamship Africa, bound to Boston last week, and the bark I'roteous, to Miramichi.

The damage to the steamer was trifling, but to the bark quite serious. The collision was quite severe, and, it is alleged, was caused bv carelessness on the part of the steamer, more conspicuous than tho unfortunate collision which caused the loss of the Arctic, and which has been so much censured in derogation of the Collins' line It happened at day-break, hen there was no fog and the moon was shining brightly. The disabled bark was subsequently towed into Halifax by the steamer. Col. Braxton Davenport has been elected President of the Jefferson Countv Agricultural Society.
