The Mayor continued the examination till Friday morniag, and ad mitted Fariss to bail for his appearance at that time. The Weather, yesterday, wits quite warm, ard the sua exceedingly oppressive. As summer is now upon us, it is high time that we were putting every nook and err er of the city in such a condition as to prevent disease of any kind from finding a resting place in our midst. Oar healthy location aad fine water should not induce ns to become careless and unclean, but, on the contrary, stimulate us to carry out those sahi'ary regulations which are always necessary for health and comfort ic a city.

One of these regulations requires every housekeeper or occupant to have the street and gutters near his premises kept in good order, and imposes a flue on any one who may permit sosp kitcien offal, or anything of that kind, to be thrown into the streets The Mayor is now doiDg all he can to prevent nuisances of every kiDd, and if any of our citizens are so far forgetful of their duty to themselves and the commuuity in which tbey live as to overlook the essentials to health and comfort, we have no doubt that he will enforce the ordinance against them. The School of Design of the Virginia Mechanics' Ics.itute is auout winding up its session, which has been a most successful one to the pupils, as their progress will show. Thus far our citizens have not seemingly appreciated this school, because they knew very little of tbe good it was effecting; but when they have an opportunity of examining the specimens of drawing executed by the pupils, and consider the extent to which the Institute has gone In developing the artistic talent of young men who now bid fair to equal the finest draughtsmen and painters of the age, we thick they will become its steadfast friends in all future time Tbe Board of Managers, we are gratified to see. have wisely determined to close this session with such notoriety as it deserves, and to that end have appointed a committee to make arrangements for a closing address some competent gentleman and for a public exhibition of the woi ks of tbe pupils. She then gate bim a blow with tbe yard stick, which she held in her hand, and retreated towards tbe back room, but he pursued and overtook her, and choked ber again.
