Wkig predijM that the Legislature will go earnestly to work, now thai the holidays are over. There is much 10 be perhaps than the Legislature will be able to accomplish. The subjects of Internal improvements and the Banks will engage much of tho time of tho members. To the latter, as involving the re-charter of existing Banks and the t-uppresrion of tho shinplaster currency, tho Whig devotes considerable space. It sees no good reason why the Legislature should gm'lo those who have no regard for the laws, a monopoly of a very profitable, though elicit business.

Why may not the lawabiding citizens reap the profits of banking as well a 9 the law-breaking Tho Mail gives the principal provisions of the bill passed by the Senate of Texas on the subsequently by the providing for the construction ol a railroad across that State from some pointnot north of the town of Fulton, to nome point the Rio Giande, at or near EI Paso. The Penny Post speculates upon a leshire delivered by Mr. A. B.

Magruder, of Albemarle, wherein that gentleman eudeavored to establish, from tlie authoiity of sacred writers, that the end was clearly pointed out, that the dsy had arrived, and that the prestHt war would terminate in the overthrow of the Turkish Empire. The Enquirir devotes a leader to the nctiou of tho Legislature on Internal Improvements. There can be no doubt of the sentiment of the public on this subject. The people will couseot to additional sacrilieesin order to complete the works already begun, but they will not tolerate any expenditure on original echcmes. The Enquirer proceeds as follows: We must confess that the action of the Legislature, so fur, implies no special regard to this manifest will of the people.

We will see if it bo possible to induce members to pause in the reckless career on which they seem to have entered. In making the experiment we wilt endeavor to dis charge our duty to the public by opposing by all possible means a rocklesa and prodigai expenditure of the public money. We will collect from the press the sentiments of the people aud will spread them before tho Legislature, so that no man may extenuate his misconduct on the plea ot ignorance. A Model raiirend riots at Erie have called forth some choice specimens of oratory Mayor King, of Erie, seems to bo a very pleasant geniuF, who indulges in delicate language when occasion draws him cut. This la a heavy Bum when the fact considered that more than tliat amount juat been expended to erect two vejjfttable mnrkethocses, which ore so incomplete in their architecture as to be almort untenantable; but we can see no plan by which the expenditure can be avoided: and as the tnginner has examined the of the eont superstructure, and pronounced them danjiv rcms, it seems to im that the better plan would be to make the appropriation for at once, let the new house be erected with all possible div pati h. If there was any certainty that the present building would stand twelve months, there might then be some plausibility in pontponin? action; but when the tact is known that it now stands as dan gerous trap, ready to tali and deetroy human life at nny moment, prudence dictates that it should be torn down iratantlv, at whatever cost The people had better be taxed for a work of this kind than for others that could be d-jferred; if the euestion put to them, we are sniffled that they would say so.

Peers, James Cray, and Isaac O. Austin and Red letter from a friend, now in Augusta, informs that these two celebrated race horses, under the management of Capt. John Relclier, are both looking remarkably fine, and that the backers of the Boatou stock ore extremely anxious to see one or both of them matched against the best of any other blood, at four mile heats, on the Augusta or Charleston eoarse. Capt. Belcher, ssya our correspondent, will take a turn with the "cracks" of the South, for a'l their Jockey Club purses, entering whichever of the two that may be best "pointed" at the time of the race; and our word for it, if he brings bis "charge" on the course in good order, the horse that be3ta either ot them will have to do much faster running than has ever been seen in the Southsrn States.

From the same source we learn that heavy inducements have been offered to Capt Belcher to visit New Orleans, with hH stable, by sentlemen, who are well nosfed in all matti-rs relating to the turf, and who look upon his "at.rina" as much stronger than that held by any other trainer in the Union. Believing that munjr of our readers will feel great interest in any race in wliich Eye or Nina may start, we shall endeavor to keep ttiem posted in whatever takes place, during the present campaign. The sport commences at Augusta next Tuesday, and as all the great horses of the country have concentrated there, if fhe weather continues gr.od, we may expect such times ss has nevtr betore been recorded at two, three and four mile heats. Governor Street Las been a perfect iaiiim for two days past, and we fear, will eontinuo so for some lime to come. Servants blockade the and hoys throng the Ptreet, omining themselves with marbles, and with shouts and yells that add nothing to the composure of distracted nerves.

Dropping the old game among rogues was attempted to be revived in our city yesterday, by' one of the b'hoys who infest Second street, to the annoyance of all its decent residents. A gentleman, well known in the city, when returning from a visit to the Shockoe Hill Burying Ground, was hailed by a lad, atthe corner of Second and irshall, who remarked, Mister, you have dropped your pocket book," at the same time in? up with a wallet which appeared to be wtjfl filled and presented it to him, claiming a reward fw his honesty.

The gentleman suspecting that all waa not right, inadc a grab at the youngster, intending to hand him orer to tne but the boy in-tant'y and made his escape. The trick is an old one in the Northern cities, and been often noticed by the press, but notwithstanding this, there are unsuspecting persons who might bite at the bait, and, therefore, we call attention to it, to open their eyes. Ttiis little fellow no doubt has his confederates crime, and he, or soma of his party, will, in all probability, try the some trick again, when they may be more successful. complaint of Mr. Ellis, Clerk ot the firft market, Joseph Sbarplty was called before the Mayor yesterday to answer to the charge of huckstering.

The evidence was that at an early hour in the morning a white man named William Walls, and a nesro fellow called George Washington, brought their carta, containing fish, to the iturzeon bench ol the first market, where they were saen at an early our by the Clerk. Shortly after this Jsmes Brown called on George, asked the price of nis fish, learned it, and was about buying a portion of them, when his attention called etffora moment. Returning in a short time to conclude his purchase, be was informed that they were all sold, and in a short time after the Clerk saw Sharpley exhibiting the same fish on nale. This made the case of huckstering perfectly clear; butSharpley wi nem's to prove that the fish were brought from York River for him, and that he had regular contract with the negro to brine him all the fish be could get. After hearing several witnesses the Mayor adjourned the case over until this morning, when he will-give tils decision as to whether tha fish shall be said for the benefit of the city or returned to Sharpley.
