Downtown Store who reportedly Lillie L0CA1 BRIto I receive uneral 7:30 to 9 CHASE CITY Two people were killed and seven others were injured in a head on colli sion on State Rt 49 about a mile north of here over the weekend Pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck were 33 year old Joyce Ann Moorefield of Chase Some 650 youngsters filled the Langston Junior High School auditorium Saturday to see the Prince Street Players' produc tion of and the Bean It was the first play of the 1973 74 season for members of the local Childrens Theatre in this age group a fire shortly after 4 a today completely destroyed the two story frame house of Lewis Hanks at 232 Lovell Drive and he was treated at Memorial Hospital for what was described as bad cut" on one arm The Lovell St residence was located behind the Westover Drive residence of ire Chief Tex Bray and members of the Bray awakened by summoned fire equipment to the scene iremen remained there until almost 8:20 am watering down the smouldering ashes that were all that remained of the house and its contents Hanks sustained the arm cut on broken glass when he under took to re enter the house through a window to retrieve some of his belongings and was taken to the hospital by mem bers of the Life Saving Crew He told persons at the scene that the fire got its start in a couch and then when he tried to get the couch out of the house it got hung in the hall This call was one of many over the weekend for Danville firemen City equipment was sum moned to the Virdan Restaurant on Main Ext in the Corridor area near the North Carolina line at 12:29 am yesterday after a blaze there was spotted by a police officer en route home after having completed a work at midnight Also answering the call were mem bers of the Pelham NC volun teer department According to city firemen material ignited in the kitchen after the restaurant's closing shortly before and the fire got up in the attic portion of the structure Clean up work at the restau rant operated by James Buckner was started yester day but the facility remained closed pending completion of repairs Another call for firemen yes terday was to extinguish a blaze in the motor of the car of Wil liam McDowell who appar ently suffered a fatal heart attack after starting the vehicle second annual pho tography show sponsored by the Recreation Department and the local camera club will be open to the public from 1 to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday at the JW Squire Armory on Main St There will be no ad mission charge The Youth Action Congress will be reactivated with five target area a parked vehicle was struck Arrested yesterday at Union and Ridge St was Juniour Harris 52 of Semora Rt 1 NC who was charged with hit run improper lane changing and drunk driving at Riverside and expected to be delivered to the county by mid December Calvin Neal chairman of the county's Board of Supervisors reported that collection routes have already been mapped and that most of the needed dump ster type refuse containers are ready to he placed in strategic locations throughout the county or about six months after refuse pickups begin property back of the former VPI Tobacco Research Station on Rt 29 south of Chatham will be used as a temporary landfill Neal said Use of this county owned land is necessary he explained until an access road can be prepared to the permanent landfill a 92 acre site in the Dry ork community When the refuse system is in operation county residents will be expected to carry their refuse to the containers at centrally located sites and trucks will empty the con tainers twice weekly according to present plans Deward Anderson Rites Set Tomorrow held New Rev Mrs Lillie Mise inal Rites Today loyd Witcher Mann ol 1319 Myrtle Ave died yesterdav it am in Memorial Hospital He had been in declining health seven years and confined tor the past four years Mr Mann was born in Dan ville eb 16 1901 a son of the late Gus and Ada Uilhs Mann On May 7 1923' he married the former Miss Ethel Edwards who survives Most of his life spent in Danville where he was a painting con tractor Mr Mann was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons Claude Mann and Clarence Mann and two daughters Miss Ruth Mann and Mrs Shirley A Perkins all of Danville and one half brother Willie Ayers of Danville The funeral will be held to morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at Wrenn Yeatts Chapel by the Rev Eugene Tally Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens The body is at the funeral home and the family is at the Howard A raft of speeding tickets and accidents marked the weekend in Danville but only two per sons were listed as injured They were both passengers in one operated by lorence Kendrick of Dry ork Rt 1 and the other by James Shel ton of Danville Rt in a 7:40 pm collision Saturday at Riverside Drive and Barter St Sarah Kendrick of Dry ork Rt 1 sustained an eye lacera tion and Juanita Shelton of Dan ville Rt 1 had a knee bruise The investigating officer re ported the Kendrick vehicle pulled through the crossover in front of a halted lane of traffic and into the path of the Shelton vehicle proceeding in River right lane Damages were estimated at $1500 to the Ken drick auto and $800 to the front and both doors of the Shelton car Police were handing out speeding tickets right and left over the weekend and were continuing radar operations today Locations worked during the weekend included Orchard Drive Northmont Blvd Clai borne St Main St Locust Lane and Central Blvd with some Chatelaine Ave at Wooding which was attributed to a heart ailment At 8:41 yesterday morning firemen were called out this time to the apartment of Catherine Samuel at 324 Cleve land St where one room was reportedly Other calls yesterday for fire men were related to dry fall weather and involved grass and leaves on city farm property at 11:24 am woods behind 158 Bernard Court (reportedly ignited by children playing with matches) at 2:22 pm and leaves in a wooded area behind 266 Arnett Blvd at 3:33 pm On Saturday afternoon local firemen had to extinguish a 1:39 pm grass fire along the rail road track beside Main Ext in the vicinity of the Danville Golf Club and a 4:04 pm brush and leaf blaze at the home of Walker Nash 2038 Main Ext cold air into buildings Also in tight supply for Pitt sylvania schools is gasoline for operation of buses with all of November's allocation having already been received at his home at 838 Buford St in preparation for taking his wife to her nursing job A neighbor reportedly heard the roar of the racing car motor and on going to determine the cause saw flames from the motor and summoned assist ance McDowell was found slumped in the vehicle his foot Semora NC was to be held today at 3:30 pm at Lebanon Christian Church by the Rev' Joe Segler and the Rev Eugene Tally Burial was to be in the church cemetery Mrs Mise died Saturday night in Memorial Hospital She was born in Pittsylvania County June 15 1894 a daughter of the late John and Lucy Dixon Dodson She spent her early life in Danville and moved to Semora in 1950 when she married Andrew Mise who died in 1963 She was employed by Dan River Inc and was a member of Lebanon Church and the Women's ellowship Club Surviving arc two nieces Mrs Thelma Lewis of Semora and Mrs Ruby Dodson Jones of Graham NC City listed as the driver of one of the autos involved and 57 ycar old Herbert Cole King Sr of Victoria Injured in the Moorefield car were Herman Allen Moorefield 37 of Chase City lacerations of the head and abrasions to the chest and abdomen Cheryl Ann Moorefield 12 abrasions of the rib cage abdomen arms and face and a fractured left leg Deborah Ann Self 20 of Chase City lacerations of the forehead and a fractured left leg and 26 year old Gary oster of Ken bridge lacerations and a frac tured left rib Cheryl Moorefield and the Self woman were transferred to Danville Memorial Hospital where both were listed in satis factory condition today oster was treated at the Danville hospital and released Injured in the other vehicle were the driver Melvin Gerald Mallory 19 of Chase City who suffered a dislocated right wrist multiple lacerations and abrasions of the body Sydnor Lee Mallory 18 of Chase City lacerations of the right eye and multiple abrasions anf Yvonne June Ridley 19 of Chase City fractured left leg and lacera tions of the face Investigating State Trooper John Palmore said the wreck happened about 9 pm Saturday when the Moorefield auto ran off the right shoulder of the road then veered back across the center line into the opposite lane striking the Mallory car head on Trooper Palmore said the Moorefield car caught fire shortly after the crash held tomorrow at 2 pm at Jasper United Methodist Church of which he was member by the Rev GW owler Burial will be in the church cemetery Mr Anderson died Saturday in a Lynchburg hospital He was born in Pittsylvania County March 15 1920 a son of Mrs Emma Ward Anderson of Jenkinstown Pa and the late William Anderson He was a veteran of World War II and was employed by the Lane Co of Altavista In addition to his mother he is survived by his wife Elizabeth Watson Anderson two daughters Mrs Shirley Carr and Miss Mildred Anderson both of Washington DC two brothers Algeria Anderson of Chester Pa and Herman Anderson of Washington five sisters Miss Agatha Meadows Mrs Madeline Kenney and Mrs Roena Moses all of Washington Mrs Minnie Richardson of New Jersey and Mrs Daliah Dennis of Jenkinstown and one grand child The body is at Miller's uneral Home at Gretna where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 o'clock tonight Death Claims loyd Marin Hollis Daniel Doss 61 of Gretna Rt 3 died today in Danville Memorial Hospital after a brief illness He was born in Pittsylvania County Aug 25 1912 a son of the late Henry and Sarah Barbour Doss He was a member of the New Bethel Church of the Brethren and was a carpenter with GL Simpson Construction Co Surviving are his wife Stella Bowen Doss of the home two daughters Misses Mary Elizabeth and Linda ay Doss both of the home one sister Mrs Lennie Mayhew of Chatham Rt 3 two brothers Wilsie Doss and Newton Doss of Chatham Rt 3 and three grandchildren The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 pm at Bethel Church bv the Kermit lora and the Rev ID Inc from 1931 to 1970 when he retired as vice president He was married in 1928 to the former Nancy Hall of Hickory NC who survives along with two daughters Mrs Louise Ludington of London England and
