THE JOURNAL Several Harley Sportsters like this 883 will be on display. There are local G. chapter members who wouldn't hesitate to ride to California and back, he said Chapter members are located as far away as California and Alaska. Despite being a cold-weather city, Edmonton has a large motorcycle riding community. The season usually runs from April to Oct 31, Dick said, but the start of the 2002 riding season has been delayed by conditions that are colder and snowier than usual Several events this summer will pull local riders onto the open road.

They include the Canadian national rally in Penticton, B.C., the western region rally in Winnipeg and a huge rally in Stur-gis, South Dakota. Dick said he expects 100 local riders will travel to Penticton, while 50 will journey to Winnipeg. The local chapter has about 200 members, 30 of them women, he said. Chapter members include doctors, lawyers, fanners, retired people, business owners, ordinary working guys and young riders with their first motorcycle. Chapter members are involved with a number of charitable causes, such as a poker run to raise money to fight muscular dystrophy, two occasions when they give rides to children who have cancer and the toy run to gather Christmas toys for needy children.

The Edmonton chapter is just one of dozens around the world. Harley-Davidson established the Harley Owners Group in 1983 in response to a growing desire by riders for an organized way to share their passion and show off their rides. By 1985, 49 chapters had sprouted around the United States, with a total membership of Rapid growth continued into the 1990s, and in 1991, H.O.G. officially went international, with i lotoring eqx)sition to include vintage and new models DAVE HALLIDAY Journal Wheeh Editor KDMONTON The open road beckons when you sit on the seat of your motorcycle. Whether it's highway or back road, there's the opportunity to put aside the hassles of everyday living for a while and to enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of the outdoors.

The Harley-Davidson Owners Group (H.O.G.) display at Powerama Motoring Expo April 26-28 at Northlands AgriCom will capture that spirit of the open road. More than 15 Harleys will be set up in a display that shows them heading down the highway. Graham Dick, a director of the local H.O.G. chapter, said atleast one bike on the simulated highway tarpaper with dots and lines will be outfitted foralong trip with tent and sleeping bag fastened on the motorcycle. The bikes will range from stock motorcycles to ones modified for more performance to those with custom paint jobs, said Dick, who aims to have his own custom-painted bike re-assembled in time for the show.

The bikes are all daily drivers for their riders. "These are bikes that have miles on them," he said. An antique Harley from the Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin will be included in the display. The bike is the recently restored 1921 Harley-Davidson Sport Twin, a relatively rare bike with a two-cylinder opposed engine. chapter, plans to have his bike in the display. The motorcycle display is one of a variety of attractions at this year's Powerama show.

Auto enthusiasts will display a wide variety of cars and trucks at the event (more about that next Dave Bowman, co-host of the Crank and Chrome television the first official European H.O.G.
