Sees Action On Release By Army PORT CLINTON "All 1 can say is that everybody's been doing their homework you can certainly tell by the results," Col.

A. W. Stoddard said at this morning's Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce breakfast. What he's talking about is the progress in making soon-to-be- vacated building at Erie Army Depot available for private industry. Most recent example Is last week's trip to Washington, D.C.

by Mayor Gordon Cooper, Luther Helserman, president of the Community Improvement Corporation and Gaylord Engler. There they learned it pays to know congressman Delbert Latta and Deputy Secretary of Defense Cyrus Vance. Still secretary of the army when he first met with the Port Clinton group, Vance now holds a position second only to the Secretary of Defense. As result, the Army "knows the whole Port Clinton story," said Engler. Chief outcome of the Pentagon meeting last week is a speedup in the process of making building 146 and its surrounding 60 acres available to industry.

The steps Include: declaration that the building is excess; forwarding the matter to the Corps of Engineers and General Service Administration, which appraises the property. Col, StoddArd says he expects appraisers within a week will: make the building available, first, to other government divisions federal, state and finally local, such as the county government before allow ing private industry to move in. Engler noted that if the county were to acquire the building could then lease it to an industry requiring the most manpower, assuring maxim-urn employment in the area. If no control were present, the building could be used for storage. "We have quite a ways to go, vut we couldn't hope for any more cooperation," he commented.
