You all have heard of Maxie Cobb And Dan the record breaker. Many laurels they have won And neither was a faker. Rut I will tell you of a race That skinned them half a mile, From short grass plains to Wash Ington Be careful lest you smile. Judge Martin started In the race, With Jumbos black and white, And the way some fellows whooped and yelled You'd tho't he'd win alright For Xeeley drove a single Not fourteen hands his size, And men were betting two to one The Judge would cap the prize. No doubt the Judge would get there None other was tils dream.

The only reason he didn't Was the fault found in Ills team. The white one always took the lead, Was progressive, don't you Ihe black one always stood his ground A standpatter sure was he. As George went plodding down the lane With his wonderful one mule shay Every time he gained an inch He held it to this day. But when the trials were thickest. And hardest to surmount, Was on the eighth ('It When the ballots were to count.

Somehow, as strange things happen Whei least we think they will, A mighty great big snowbank, As big as any hill, Had drifted by the roadside' Right where they lad to go; And George, by starting early, Had passed the heap of snow. The Judge came dashing onward, In haste he sped along, Nobody would've suspeeted That anything was wrung. When all at once Old Blackey Concluded to stand pat, And Whitie thought he wouldn't, So on he went like seat! Just at tols tragic moment The snow came sliding down And hurried Judge and Blackie Clean out of signt and soun' But Whitie made his git-away, By bis progressive graces; And seeing the progressive mule, (-'lose by ids side he paces. George you know progressive, too, And seeing how well they mated, Right to his cart lie bitched the two And drove oil, much elated. Soon they reached the Capital, This trio most progressive.

Alas for Jude and Blackie! Whose friends were so transgress! ve They left, them In the snowbank, Where they started to stand pat, And all who read this poem Will know where they are at. For I am one who watched the race, From on the pile of snow; And when I saw that it would slide, To Blackie I said, "Whoa" Now all you boys, who stake your Cash On chargers for ihe races, If the stead is not progressive, Don't gamble on his graces. The hare and tortoise ran a race And the tortoise won the day; Because he was progressive And plodded on bis way. But Master Hareie wasn't, And stopped to take a While Mr. Tortoise was advancing, Coming along his best.

And when he passed the standpat hare A 'sleeping by the roadside; He just kept on progressing I'ntil the goal he spied. This story Is a fable, By others called a fake. Sir. But the one about George Neeley Should surely take the cake, Sir..
