SANDUSKY Saturdays March 20. 1954 FOLKS AND FACTS By HARRY STACK "THOSE OLDEN DAYS" many things have been said and written about early Sandusky, Including "first" this and "first" as to settlers, homes, to list more sucli things might no longer be news to some of our readers. Yet, for some items to "register" in one's mind a 1)it of lepitition may not come amiss. By this token we'll mention a contribution of "old news" recently sent us by a reader who said, "Maybe I've read of this before, but if I have I can't remember." And since that may be the case with others, we'll repeat some of the old item's contents. It pointed out that although the year of 1811 has been often driven as the date of Sand y' settlement, then Place, it was, in fact, three years before that some first white settlers came here.

In 1808, it was said, among the "first" arrivals were "Stephen Downing, W. F. Pollock and Mawley Tanner." The year 1811 saw many settlers arriving in the "Fire- lands" areas south of Sandusky, and one of the first townships was named Florence. It was also in 1811 that the area's "first military company" was formed, naming David Barrett its first captain. Then the old item devoted some space to "Old Sandusky's first murder." We recall having once read something about it before, but as contributor said of himself, we're not clear as to pertinent facts.

At any rate the first "local murder" was committed in April, 1812, and two white men were the victims. These two early settlers, Michael Gibbs and At Buell by name, were killed and scalped by Indians in the Glbbs log cabin for some of their personal possessions. The cabin was said located about one mile east of Sandusky on what was then called the "Huron trail." Both men were members of that "first military company" and were said to have planned to attend company muster at Huron the next day! When the murder became known on that next day members of the company, joined by Jonas Gibbs, brother of the murdered Michael, and separating into groups, started out in search of the murderers. Some went to "Upper Sandusky," now Fremont; and looked up John Fleming, an old Indian trader, who spoke the Indian dialect. With his aid they finally came to question two natives at whom suspicion seemed to point.

One of them, named Ohmick, was found to be in possession of some clothing identified as having belonged to Michael Glbbs. Ohmick implicated another Indian by the name of Sehmo. When the latter was seized and realized that he faced trial and possible execution by hanging, he asked his guard to shoot him. Upon refusal, he suddenly seized the guard's rifle and shot himself to death rather than be hanged. Ohmick was taken to Qeveland for trial, found guilty and sentenced to be hanged.

And now It was Ohmick who asked his guard to shoot him. When the latter wouldn't comply, Ohmick begged Fleming, who had been a sort of friend, to kill to escape death by hanging. Fleming refused, and Ohmick was hanged in June, 1812. Now while the old Item did not explain the Indians great dread of being hanged, though they did not fear death otherwise, we believe we know the reason. The Indian looks forward to a life of his spirit after physical death.

He expects his spirit to join the spirits of his ancestors in the great Happy Hunting Gromid. He also believes that at death the spirit leaves the body through his mouth. A hanging, whlcn chokes the oral passage, would make It impossible for the spirit to escape. It would be stifled in the body. Thus, a death by hanging would take from the Indian the chance of spiritual life with his forefathers.

No greater curse could befall him than to be barred from the Happy Hunting Ground. Hence the great dread of Ohmick and Sehmo to die by hanging. Well, Sehmo "made it," but Ohmick didn't. STATE The lust and brutality, the love and sacrifice of the people who helped to write one of the most thrilling pages in the history of the LAst Frontier, and especially of a woman outlaw and 500 desperate men who were caged up with her in a desert outpost, is pictured with full dramatic power In "Devil's Canyon," heading a double feature program Sunday through Tuesday. "Night People," taking place In present-day Berlin, is an authentic and authoritative expose of the trials and tribulations of champions of the free way of life in coping with the ruthless forces of Russian Communism. It Is a cloak and dagger drama that reveals the cruel extremes to which the Reds go to effect complete domination of humans. The city of Berlin plays an eerie role the mystery drama, for many present day landmarks have been used, including the Brandenburg Gate, Unter Linden, the burned out Reischtag building, and the bunkerrin in the Chancellery where Hitler and Eva Braun met deaths. The Old Grist Mills, charged by the state with having sold adulterated foods, today said the specific product referred to by the state in Its charge was buckwheat flour Peter Schwai-ze, agent for the Grist Mills, was fined $50 and costs in municipal court Thursday, with the fine suspended, on an adulteration charge. The charge was filed by S. Belknap, inspector for the Division of Foods. Belknap Informed the court here Thursday that the Grist Mills violation did not appear to be intentional but rather "it was a case of carelessness" in that "the grain was not properly cleaned before it was grouiid." Mr. Schwarze, in a statement today, said the carelessness was not the fault of the Sandusky concern, but rather that of the grain elevator supplying the buckwheat to him.

The buckwheat flour sampled by the state and on which It based its charge, was found to have contained jimson seed. Mr. Schwarze has voluntarily reclaimed all outstanding supplies of the flour and disposed of it as animal feed, he said today. Theater Schedules OHIO (Last From Oklahoma" 3:45, 6:45, 9:30. "Capt.

AS WE LIVE Marriage And Great Age Difference ful that a marriage between two people of such great age difference, especially when the woman is so much older could ever work out satisfactorily. When you are in the prime of your life, she will be an old woman. If you continue to see her as you have been doing since her husband's death, this infatuation will unquestionably get stronger 'and you will ask her to marry you. If she accepts your offer, you will be faced with many problems as time goes on and tlie difference in your ages begins to be even more apparent than it is now, Furthermore, if you continue to ee her, you will cut yourself off rom young women of a suitable age. This is unfortunate because, you want to marry, now is the time for you to be looking around for a person who will make a suitable life mate for you.

Have you ever stopped to consider the possibility that this woman considers you as a good friend whom she has no intention of marrying? Her reluctance to be definite about her feelings for you should give you a clue as to her feelings. There is also the problem of her married children. They are likely to oppose their mother's marrying a man who is about their jown ages. Why not talk over this matter with your friend and get things straightened outv Keep her as a good friend but try to fall in love with a younger woman.
