The Military Vehicle Preservation Association plans to display 18 military vehicles ranging from Jeeps to large trucks at this year's show, which runs today through Sunday at Edmonton Expo Centre (previously called Northlands AgriCom). The exhibit will be "the biggest military vehicle display the city has seen in a long time," said John McEwcn, who has arranged for the vehicles to appear at Powerama. McEwen expects there will be plenty of interest in the exhibit because "there's a good deal of sympathy and support for the military here in Edmonton." The show will feature a mix of muscle cars, street rods and restored collector vehicles.

A swap meet of race, street rod and collector vehicle parts will also be part of the event. Pete Chapouris of So-Cal Speed Shop will be the celebrity guest at this year's show. Chapouris has been involved in the design or construction of a number of well-known cars such as the 1934 Ford coupe known as the California Kid and the ZZ Top Eliminator owned by Billy Gibbons. The centrepiece of the military-vehicle display is a half-track that was the command vehicle when the South Alberta Regiment battled the Germans in the FaJaise pocket in France in August 1944 during the Second World War. The regiment's Major D.V.

Currie won the Victoria Cross for his leadership role in the battle. Although most vehicles used during the war were left behind when the war ended, the half-track was brought back to Canada, McEwen said. The vehicle has been restored. Among the other vehicles in the exhibit are a Lynx armoured scout car, a universal carrier often called a Bren Gun carrier a command car built on a Dodge Power Wagon chassis, a pickup truck style Power Wagon from the Korean War era, two deuce and a half trucks, a Second World War-era Harley-Davidson motorcycle, a Chinese military motorcycle a copy of a BMW complete with sidecar and trailer, a number of Jeeps and three examples of the litis. McEwen said the Chinese motorcycle was used to re-supply tanks with ammunition on the battlefield, which he expects was a hazardous assignment.

The motorcycle, sidecar and trailer would make a run up to a tank in combat, unload the ammunition, then retreat to pick up another load and repeat the process. The Edmonton Antique Car Club's display will include 10 cars and trucks, all of them 1939 or older. The oldest vehicle in the display is a 1920 Studebaker touring a four-door open car that is the forerunner of the modern convertible. The others include a 1926 Ford Model touring, a 1927 Chrysler sedan, a 1929 Graham-Paige sedan, a 1929 Ford Model A phaeton another convertible-style car, a 1930 Ford Model A two-door sedan and SUPPIIEO CHARLES WORTON.
