Rockefeller once said that it was possible to have too much money. I never believed it, bat then I'm often wrong: until last night I didn't believe it was possible to have too many comedians.

But that's just what was wrong with "The Colgate Comedy Hour." There were comedians coming out of cracks in the walls, popping on and off like ducks in a shooting gallery, It was comedy by the assembly, line method, and it didn't work. The average comic takes about four minutes to warm up; since mat was about the time allotted to each of 13 jokers, we had an hour of warm-ups. Not that there wasn't funny stuff. There were lines like Nipsey Russell's observation on international politics, "Neutrals are people who don't know that fallout can blow sideways," and Phyllis Diller's sure-fire lamenting over her looks: "If a thing of beauty is a joy forever, I feel Bob MicKenzI like RADIO LOGS 4 P.M. But some routines never got going. The Carl Reiner-Mel Brooks "2000-year-old Man" is a routine that gets funnier for 15 minutes.

It got three, and the gags were weaker than usual. It may be that comedians who sit on stools and make imaginary telephone calls are already anachronistic. Shelley Berman's "Child on the Phone" seemed dusty. Berman introduced Phyllis Diller with a quote from Keats. It sounded very erudite of Berman, unless you happened to know that the line is.

really from Byron. Rowan and Martin's sketch about the Shakespearean actor confronting a nightclub heckler is funny, and they were allowed time to get well into it. There's no telling why the actor is introduced as Richard Burton since Rowan doesn't imitate Burton, or is that nit-picking? Dick Shawn briefly aped a rock singer and disappeared. Russell got off 10 one-liners and started dancing. Miss Diller popped sorne kitchen jokes and was gone.

The turnover was terrific. There was some fun in a song-and-dance by Edie Adams, Nanette Fabray and Kaye Ballard, if you like the girls awfully well. Allan Sherman was not in top form with his song parodies. There was a lot of talent zipping before our eyes. But any four of them could have done a better hour.

Educational television is acquiring muscle. ETV will have a two-to-three-hour coast to coast series on Sunday nights in the fall, dealing with major events of each week, analyzed in depth by thoroughgoing journalists and experts. The series accomplished a major coup this week with the signing of Edward P. Morgan as its senior correspondent ABC has given Morgan a twdPyear leave from his five-year contract with the network to devote full time to the ETV program. The word "distinguished" is applied indiscrimi-: nately to veteran newscasters, but it applies accurately to Morgan.

He is the most illuminating commentator in broadcasting. He has a gift for seeing events in broad perspective, fitting the pieces into total pictures. His summations and sidelights during the Congressional elections described the forest while other commentators were talking about the trees. Morgan is a seer and philosopher as well as a good newsman, and the educational network is fortunate to have his services. Leigh Taylor-Young, the moon-faced ingenue who replaced Mia Farrow on the "Peyton Place" series will be "phased out" of the scripts in August, to become another of the several lucky people who have gotten out of town.

Miss Taylor-Young's character will depart the scene with the possibility of her return left open. The actress recently married Ryan O'Neal, one of the PP leads. O'Neal will stay with the show. The Armed Forces Radio and Television service has picked the Mike Douglas show to be beamed to GIs in 39 foreign countries, including seven Vietnam TV stations "Journey to the Center of the Earth" will be a new half-hour Saturday cartoon series for kids, based on the Jules Verne science-fiction classic.
