He noted the clothing industry has also changed from "being fitted" into a garment by a seamstress to ready-to-wear clothing. "Back in the early days we didn't carry merchandise on the floor of the store," he noted. "A sales clerk would take a customer to a sitting room where she would pick out a garment and be fitted by a seamstress.

"A large part of the apparel business in the early days was the alteration department. There would be 14 to 15 seamstresses and pressers working in the department." The veteran retail outlet in women's apparel carries three generations of experience. The chain of six stores was founded in 1939 in Modesto by Joseph Rich. His father, Maurice Reich, owned Reich-Lievre, the largest chain of women's apparel stores in California before the Depression in the early 1930s. Rich said he changed the family name from Reich to Rich to make it easier for customers to pronounce. The chain of Rich's Women's Apparel stores is now operated by Jay Rich, son of the founder, with three stores in Sacramento and one each in Carmichael, Yuba City and Roseville.

Rich opened the Roseville Square store in 1966. Manager of the store is Marcy Ripple, who helped open it. The elder Rich, who turned the business over to his son 10 years ago, said the largest change in women's apparel over the past five decades has been from business suits and dresses to leisure clothing. "Years ago there were no pant suits or slacks for women," he said. "Today, 75 percent of the business is KEN'S TIRE CENTER A i NEW TIRES for Datsun, Toyota, V.W., Volvo, Honda, Mazda, Subaru.
