Their mother's brother took the small boys and sent them to school for a time.

Huron 7-2111 Steamer "Vermilion" Burned At Huron Pier HURON "Steam Boat burned Several Lives Lost." This blaring story gained fl key place in (he Cleveland Daily News edition of Monday, Nov, 7, 1842, telling of the steamer which burned at the Huron pier at about 1 a.m. on the Sunday previous. Loaned by John Rhinemiller, the clipping relates the following story; o'clock p.m., Nov. 6, undersigned, being a committee appointed by the citizens of Huron to take measures lo relieve the distress of the sufferers, and make arrangements for the decent interment of the dead, in the unfortunate burning of the Steamship 'Vermilion' which took place at our port this morning, report the following facts as having come to our knowledge by the report, of others, and from personal observation." Among the freight they were tnking on was can of 'turpentine' which by some means was turned out and spread over the deck, and coming in contact with the chimney took fire, and in a moment the boat was on fire from stem to stern. The passengers, some 40 to 50 in number, were all asleep in their berths. "They were soon aroused, but before they could get on to the pier the fastenings were burned off, and the boat drifted out into the lake.
