Gord was predeceased in August 1993 by his beloved Joanne. He was a loving Dad to Beverly (Gerald) Berkhold of Calgary, JoAnn (LeRay) Pahl of Medicine Hat and Jill (Rick) Johnson of Edmonton. He was an energetic Gramps to nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Hainstock's Funeral Home 9810-34 Avenue. 440-2999. -003102 THOMAS, Mary J. Mary J. Thomas, a dedicated, enthusiastic and faithful minister of the United Church of Canada for 34 years, died at home August 21, 1997.

She was 65 years. Mary, adopted daughter of Albert and Clara Thomas, was born in North Bay, Ontario on July 12, 1932. She grew up in Toronto and Blythwood Public School, Oakwood High and Lawrence Park High School. Mary graduated from Victoria University in 1955 and the Ontario College of Education in 1956. She taught two years in London, Ontario.

She then graduated from Emmanuel College with a Master of Religious Education in 1960. From 1960-66 she was Director of Christian Education at St. James-Islington United Church, Toronto. In 1967, she graduated from the Chicago Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity. She returned to Toronto taking on the position of Deaconess of Woodgreen United Church, where she was very much involved in the Inner City work, particularly with mothers and children.

She was ordained Toronto, June, 1969. As an ordained Minister, Mary served four pastoral charges; 1970-74 Second Minister Grace United Church, Lloydminister, Alberta, 1974-84 Minister Southminister-Steinhauer Pastoral Charge, Edmonton, Alberta, 1984-88 Minister Edson-Peers Pastoral Charge, Edson, Alberta. Following a sabbatical year of study and travelling, Mary served at Symon's Valley United Church until her retirement May 28, 1995. Throughout Mary's ministry, she sought to bring creativity and enthusiasm into the life and work of the Church. She was a vocal advocate, no matter the cost, on the important issues of the day, strongly believing in justice for the marginalized in our society.

She was a role model for many in her various congregations and among her numerous friends. Mary published, in 1982, a Bible Study called Basic Christian Beliefs. From the onset of her illness, she totally revised this study which is now called Basic Biblical Understanding. In the last three months her interest and concern for Canadian unity resulted in a study guide on this topic. These two endeavors will be published at a later date.

She also worked on the McDougall United Church's planning and development committee. All these things gave meaning and purpose to her, in her final days.
