1 I i Heavy weeh filled 5 mm Tili As de la Hoya shows he's real thing vAth sudden steps By BILL FARRELL By MICHAEL KATZ Daily News Staff Writer Even in a tournament as unpredictable as the Daily News Golden Gloves, nothing is as unpredictable as a night featuring novice super-heavyweights. Having more to do with girth and guts than experience and sawy, these contests more often than not end with a ''0 r't sudden thud. i ft tVi Usually tipping the scales at well "I'm a fighter who's only had 17 pro fights," he said. "I'm a little puppy in this sport and I'm out there against big dogs." Speaking of which, Toney's bark may be louder than his bite, but his bite may be too big for his britches. He has made "pound for pound" a description of his eating habits as he has eaten himself out of contention.

Toney complained he had trouble making 168 pounds against Jones, then in the hours after the weigh-in re-gained 16 pounds and fought sluggishly. He had trouble making 175 for Griffin, throwing up after a quick post-weigh-in meal and then coming in the ring at 187. He was just as sluggish. He hurt Griffin with a vintage counter right at the end of the third round, but was so wild in his followup punch, he knocked himself down. He never landed another serious blow.

He didn't throw enough blows, either. He complained about the decision, though only Duane Ford, usually a big friend of Bob Arum fighters, had it even. The other two officials and most ringsiders had the undefeated Griffin comfortably ahead (116-112 on the Daily News card). Jackie Kallen, Toney's manager, told him he had no one to blame but himself. At least, he did not threaten to shoot her.

"He lacks experience," said Ruelas. "He doesn't take the initiative. He lets guys fight their fight. Molina is not a big puncher and he hurt him a couple of times. If he shows the inexperience he showed tonight, it'll be a short night." There were indications of another short night for de la Hoya when a left hook floored Molina in the opening round.

But the IBF junior lightweight champion he relinquished the 130-pound title to remain a lightwight even after losing his shot at de la Hoya's WBO 135-pound title braved the expected early storm and fought back. This was his first loss in five years. De la Hoya appeared confused by someone punching back. By the fifth round, he was gasping for air. He often glanced up at the clock to see how much time was left in each round.

Molina, noticeably smaller and less powerful, was charging head-first into him and until the last rounds, de la Hoya was mainly just grabbing. Molina complained that referee Mills Lane, grabbing him by the' neck to break the frequent clinches (15 in the final round alone), was hurting him more than de la Hoya was. At the end, though, de la He began sidestepping and jabbing. He said he fought "an unintelligent fight." Daily New Sport Writer LAS VEGAS On the night boxing's "Golden Boy" showed he was 24-karat Golden Boy, 50 counterfeit "Team Toney" credentials were seized and a phony Toney was confiscated by unheralded Montell (Ice) Griffin. Griffin, trained by Eddie Futch, cooly outpointed a sluggish, over-weight and lethargic James Toney, making his first start since his first defeat.

Toney, losing a 12-round majority decision Saturday night to a 1992 Olympian with only 14 previous pro fights, made one wonder just how good Roy Jones Jr. was Nov. 18 in beating a man then regarded by some as the best in boxing. But Toney's second loss was in a sense overshadowed by Oscar de la lloya's first real pro victory, a gut-checking 12-round unanimous decision over ever-charging John John Molina. The 1992 gold-medal Olympian with only 16 previous pro fights showed real mettle.

After millions of dollars, de la Hoya became a professional. Just how good he is, or can be, has yet to be determined, though acid test No. 2 is scheduled May 6 against IBF lightweight champion Rafael Ruelas. Ruelas, at the MGM Grand Arena ringside, said de la lloya's victory "confirms what I've been over 200 pounds, every hopeful in the division carries "a puncher's chance." Few waste any time before tossing what they believe will be the big blow that will carry them to the next round of the tourney. This is the week when they will get their chance.

The super-heavyweight novice class makes its debut Thursday night at Yonkers Raceway. A second night of super-heavyweight action is scheduled for Friday in Woodhaven, Queens at St Thomas Apostle on Jamaica at 88th St The light-heavyweights will start things off tomorrow with first-round action in the 178-pound novice class. Eliminations in the 112-pound novice division round out tomorrow night's card at the Queens Elks Club, 82-10 Queens Blvd. Wednesday at Mt. St Michael Academy, 4300 Murdock the 201-pound heavyweight novice division begin its eliminations.

Sharing the card will be the 125-pound novice division. The remainder of the 132-pound novice division will complete its first-round action on Friday along with the super-heavies at St. Thomas Apostle. It should be an exciting week. Just don't blink.
