Pa. Phone 334-4410 Labels on Today's Clothes GETTYSBURG Labels on today's clothes do more than give the manufacturer's name because the Federal Trade Commission requires manufacturers and importers of garments and certain piece goods to include detailed information. The care labels are helpful in selecting garments that are easy to care for. "Machine Wash." according to previous guidelines, indicated the garment was machine washable It was up to the consumer to determine the water temperature and wash cycle to select. Today's labels on washable products state whether to wash items by hand or by machine and includes washing methods instructions as well as the proper water temperature to use The care label also states how to dry a garment and.

if it applies, at what dryer temperature setting For items requiring dry cleaning, the label states "professional dry cleaning only" if the garment can not be safely cleaned in coin operated dry cleaning machines. The labels, in other words, show special care needed for machine or hand washing, drying, ironing, pressing, bleaching, dry cleaning, and leather or suede cleaning. Manufacturers or importers providing instructions for a care label must have evidence that the instructions are accurate. The more detailed labels, explaining how to safely wash or clean the item, mean longer wear and better service for all garments, including a youngster's back to school clothes. They help avoid errors resulting in a new sweater or jeans turning out several sizes smaller after washing.

Check the care label as well as the price tag when buying clothes. Knowing how- to care for the garment can save money and at the "same time, help one look sharper. from Consumer Reports By the Editors of Consumer Reports One problem with traditionally sized vans is that they're too big to fit in a garage. But Consumer Reports auto engineers say that's not the case with the new smaller vans, such as the Plymouth Voyager and Toyota Van Deluxe Although they have sliding side doors and lots of cargo space like traditional vans, they're less trucklike and feel more like passenger cars. Both a Plymouth Voyager SE and a Toyota Van Deluxe were tested by the engineers.

Each vehicle can seat seven people. Standard equipment on the front-wheel-drive Voyager and its twin the Dodge Caravan includes power steering, power brakes, and tinted glass. It was priced at more than S13.IKK) when equipped with options, including such major ones as a larger engine, automatic transmission, air conditioning, and a Basic Group package, plus the destination charge. The Voyager rode as well as manv sedans and station wagons, accelerated well, and was comfortable and quiet. Its fuel economy, at 30-miles-per-galIon expressway driving and 16 mpg in city traffic, was competitive with many- passenger cars.

The small van also had" a large and nicely shaped cargo area when its seats were removed However, the auto engineers found the Voyager's handling sluggish and vague. Stopping it when lightly loaded and without locking the brakes took too long. The auto engineers say there's nn data on which to predict reliability because both the Voyager and Dodge Caravan are new this mode! year. But other Chrysler products, as a group, have been worse-than-average." The Toyota Van Deluxe is an unusual mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Standard equipment on the model tested included a fuel-injected 2-liter.

4- cyhnder engine, power brakes, and reclining tront seats It was priced at more than $12.000 when options such as an automatic overdrive transmission and power steering were added and the destination charge tacked on. Consumer Reports' auto engineers found the Toyota Van disappointing in almost even respect. Itshandlmewasunpreci.se: its stability and traction were well below par. and its ride was harsh and bouncy Although the Toyota engine and transmission performed very well and oftered fairly good fuei economy. especially expressway driving, the engine is situated in the middle of the oasenger compartment, where, according to the auto engineers, it could create horrendous problems.

You have to unsnap several latches and lift the driver's seat with part of the floor just to check or add oil and check the coolant level The battery is in a compartment under the fl'or behind 'he driver's seat In addition, the a lacked quality ot finish that the auto engineers have come to expect other Toyota rr.ixieis Because the Toyota Van is new for 1934. no data is or; which in predict reliability i i 1984. "And learning can take place to" It can be subconscious learning from other members. You can knit for 30 years and then learn a new way." speaking of the learning that happens when a group of women meet to make crafts. The groups are geared to the home and family and homemaking skills today's woman needs. "It is more than canning, cooking and sewing.

It takes into account new ways of And gets into child abuse and caring for senior citizens." One nice thing about the organization is no set regimens. Some groups prefer crafts and some groups prefer speakers. A lot of the groups have a mix of the two. The extension service offers guidelines and topics of interest through leadership training workshops. Two members of each group attend workshops and bring home handouts, patterns and recipes, passing the information on to the group.

"It's the extension's way of training the rest of the group," she'said- Recent workshops offered were "creative vegetables." "holiday gift ideas" and "entertaining ways." One workshop she really liked was one on whole wheat pie crusts. "I tried it and it was really good. Now plain pie crusts are boring. I even crush up a wheat cereal and use it in the dough. There were 10 different pies and 10 different crusts." she said.

"We made the wheat-type pies for the homemakers group. Got a lot of mixed review, but they tried it." "I'm very enthusiast about homemakers. There's something for all homemakers."
