A16 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2006 CANADA EDMONTON JOURNAL Governor General to recognize former Edmonton mayor BEA at the bay FLORENCE LOVIE Journal Staff Writer EDMONTON ESTEE LAUDER Former Edmonton mayor Jan Reimer is among six Canadian women who will be honoured by the Governor General Michaelle Jean today for their work towards the advancement of women's equality. Each of the recipients will be presented with the Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case during a ceremony at Rideau Hall. The awards were instituted in 1979 by the Canadian government, with the help of former governor general Edward Schreyer, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Persons Case, and the five Alberta women whose determination led to the landmark victory in the struggle of Canadian women for equality. Reimer has served as the provincial coordinator of the Al- rVnnrt'1 nf Wnmpn' Shplfprs whirh represents 41 shelters across the province, since 2002. "Throughout her long and distinguished career, Jan Reimer has worked tirelessly to promote safe communities and ensure the well-being of society's most vulnerable members seniors, youth and women in abusive relationships," Lucie Brosseau, media officer with Rideau Hall press office, said in a release.

She has also worked diligently to support First Nations women's shelters in Alberta by developing a strategy to address the large disparity in funding between First Nation shelters and provincially funded shelters. Reimer spent nine years as a city councillor before being elected mayor in 1989. During her two terms in office, Reimer undertooka number of initiatives including the Mayor's Task Force on Safer Cities, a youth advisory committee, an economic development strategy, the Mayor's Task Force on Investment in the Arts, and equitable-hiring practices. Vague' law unfair to Hells Angels, says lawyer The Canadian Press VANCOUVER Anyone who belongs to an organization should be worried about a federal law that has labelled the Hells Angels a aiminal group, alawyer for the motorcycle club said Tuesday.

Alan Gold argued in B.C. Supreme Court that the legislation used to declare the Hells Angels a criminal organization is "vague and over-broad." A person can wake up one morning and find a group they've belonged to for years is suddenly called criminal. "Do not, please, assume that the only people who are concerned about this are Hells Angels," Gold told Justice William Ehrcke. "Tamils, Sikhs, people involved in Middle East politics there is a substantial list of candidate organizations to be labelled criminal organizations." Gold called the law state-sanctioned denunciation, similar to being told your skin is the wrong colour and that you have to sit at the back of the bus. Vancouver Hells Angel Rick Ciarniello filed a petition in court asking that the six-year-old federal law be thrown out on constitutional grounds.

His court action was prompted by an Ontario court decision last year which convicted two Hells Angels of extortion and for being part of a criminal organization. In trying to convince Ehrcke to hear a full petition on the constitutional argument, Gold called the legislation "evil," and said membership in the Hells Angels is the same as being charged with a crime. j3amiello's petition claims that since the Ontario court ruling he's been the subject of harassment and has been ostracized by the community. hA i -( ism wmtt 'vaZ'-i-' theay Get up to 50 more Hbc Rewards points Use both cards together on every purchase at the entire Hbc family of stores.
