Edmonton skip Kevin Martin, who won the 1991 Canadian championship, says a more active players' association is needed as curling's profile and the money it generates grows. "It has been needed forever, there's getting to be more and more money," says Martin. "The TV ratings are phenomenal and in the bigger events, like the Brier, you cant wear any advertising from your sponsor. That would mean huge, huge dollars to the curler." The players and the sport's governing body, the Canadian Curling Association, have been feuding since last year over whether competitors should be allowed to wear their sponsors' corporate logos at the Brier. Judge blows whistle on suit against NHL Mike Lewicki's attempt to sue the NHL for $450 million is over for now.

Lrewicki, a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, filed his suit Oct 11th, seeking damages to fans and hockey-related businesses affected by the current lock-out Justice James Kent says Lewicki failed to prove NHL teams did not plan to refund money for tickets to cancelled games. Kent also ruled that Lewicki was acting in his own behalf, not as a representative of a group. Lewicki said he will appeal the decision. Navy surgeons link boxing to brain damage British Royal Navy surgeons said Friday they have found new evidence that boxing can cause brain damage. Their research, based on a study of 40 servicemen who boxed and two groups who did not, showed boxers were more likely to suffer brain defects and that their reactions were slower.

The survey showed that blows to the head restricted blood and oxygen supply to various parts of the brain. The responses of boxers in thought, movement and feeling were also affected. The death in April of boxer Bradley Stone provoked a storm of protest from British doctors and the British Medical Association has called for the sport to be banned. Soggy season opener for Spurs and fans The San Antonio Spurs' season opener was delayed Friday night by 50 minutes when a fireworks display triggered the Alamodome sprinkler system, drenching fans, players and coaches alike. A high-pressure water cannon in back of the stadium's eastern lower grandstand poured water on the crowd shortly after the fireworks display.

The fireworks accompanied player introductions for the Spurs' game against the Golden State Warriors. Players and coaches stood watching the shower, then hurriedly walked back to their locker rooms once they realized they were about to get soaked. Several fans opened umbrellas during the three-minute indoor shower. The stream initially just hit the crowd but gradually became stronger and reached the court The Alamodome loudspeaker system urged the fans to stay calm and not to panic. Bengal will appeal -fine for clubbing QB Cincinnati Bengals linebacker James Francis said he will fly to New York on Tuesday to appeal the NFL's decision to fine him $12,500 for his hit Sunday on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman.

Francis said he had no intention of hurting Aikman with the forearm to the head. He said Dallas offensive lineman Mark Tuinei pushed him into Aikman and that he avoided the block with his arm high. Dallas coach Barry Switzer, who complained to the NFL about the hit, praised the decision to fine Francis. New England Patriots coach Bill Parcells appeared to be in good health Friday after spending the night in a hospital because of lightheadedness. Parcells, 53, who had heart bypass surgery in February 1992, checked into Massachusetts General Hospital around 6 p.m.

Thursday. Reds owner considering moving baseball team Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott says she has met with National League president Leonard Coleman and discussed the possibility of moving the club to another city. She isn't using relocation as a scare tactic, Schott said from her home Friday. She would not say if she has any deadline for a possible move. Schott said she still believes the city has made substantial effort to keep the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals from relocating, but no effort to satisfy her demands for the Reds.

The Cincinnati businesswoman, who also owns car dealerships, bought control of the Reds in 1984 because she said she was afraid someone else might move the team from the city.
