wouldn't have been the same for three major leaguers if it had not been for bowling Detroit Tigers pitcher Dave Rozema, coming off extensive knee surgery for torn ligaments, and Tiger outfielder Kirk Gibson suffering from a remjury to his left wrist, both used bowling as part of their therapy in the off season Tiger team physician Dr Clarence Livingood said he thought bowling was good therapy, "reasonable and fine in their cases Another pitcher who used bowling to helpftrengthen his arm was Detroit Milt Wilcox The bowling therapy makes sense to Wilcox The bowling therapy makes sense to Wilcox, who noted that today's procedures with sore-armed pitchers call for lifting weights an underhand motion But it is not likely that Rozema, pretty good with the underhand toss in bowling, will try a submarine pitch with a base ball "Rosey hardly ever misses a spare, despite suggestions from Gibson that he "work the corners Gibson pronounced himself recovered and ready to play after his therapy Bowling stretches out my arm it really has done me some good he declared He had surgery Aug 22 1980 for ligament damage, prior to his remjury The pwerful left-hander was hurt both times taking mighty swings of the bat Gibson has become a bowling buff along the way sometimes taking lane lessons from Detroit-area all stars He recently retired a hard-shelled plastic ball for a urethrane model that hooks better for him Rozema started his bowling therapy comeback by taking just one step to the line in his delivery Gradually, he ex panded it to five steps Although the lanky right-hander has a lot of intestinal fortitude he remains true to his image as a screwball even in bowling Some like to kid him about an illegal pitch as his ball is a Shore model which virtually has become obsolete because in geneal it has tested too soft for American Bowling Congress standards When someone told him it didn fr have any sick-weight Rozema replied indignantly 'Of course not I don't use an illegal ball As he talked the Detroit Rose was standing in high top bowling shoes ripped on the top and the bottom They are 35-years-old and once belonged to his father Rozema will wear no others they are his gamers Also joining Rozema and Gibson on the lanes on occasion was outfielder Lynn Jones Rozema was jnable to go into a deep knee bend because of his injury but usually beat his buddies anyway I bowl every chance I get Wilcox said In 1973 I bowled 10-15 games a week to help strengthen my pitching arm Wilcox said his.basebdll career was in jeopardy then be cause ol an arm problem until an Oklahoma Citv orthopedic- surgeon suggested bowling to help build up the injured limb Well 1 liked to bowl Wilcox recalled, "so I just started going to the lanes after the season ended By Christmas time I could feel the arm getting stronger And then I was okay the next season Wilcox and Tiger teammate Enos Cabell used to be on the same baseball team in winter ball in Venezuela and their families often went bowling together About four years ago Wilcox a righthander, came down with a sore right thumb Not wanting to give up the tenpin game he switched to bowling left-handed and averaged 170 It seemed to work out so he stayed that way until one night while pitching for the Cleveland Indians against the Texas Rangers he ran to the first-base foul line to make a play at first Unfortunately he encountered the batter Ienny Randle insteadand was bumped to the ground on his left shoulder It hurt to bowl after that so he just switched back to bowling right-handed Baseball players seem to be able to pick up bowling quickly John the Tiger supervisor of ushers and a good bowler himself thought he saw some promise in De troit John Wockenfuss a catcher-turned-utility player After a few instructions from Leszczynski, Wockenfuss showed up at a post Detroit Bonanza All-Star Classic session one night and impressed the big shooters with a 236 game Wockenfuss then bought some new equipment and gener ally hits between 180 and 200 in bowling, that is Tiger manager Sparky Anderson recalled his first attempt at bowling at Galveston, Texas 1 1 kept bouncing the ball on the lanes Anderson said, "and finally the manager came over to tell me to take it easy because the lanes were new "I was so embarrassed I just quit bowling Anderson stayed away from the game until a few years ago when he rolled along with former Tiger Jim Northmp in radio station WJR's annual party The Tiger manager surprised himself with a IX game Northnip had 3M, and they won the chanty event LEGAL
