Since the drive started one week ago, government spokesmen said more than 1,100 North Vietnamese troops have been killed. Government losses were placed at 50 dead and 235 wounded. The Communists started their offensive on March 30 by moving across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) into Quang Tri, South Viet-nam's northern-most province. They routed government troops and took control of the province on May l.

The current drive is the first concerted South Vietnamese attempt to recapture the province, the first ever taken by the Communists. Funds for wildlife in state California Congressman Harold T. (Bizz) Johnson today revealed the Golden State will receive $1,108,258 in federal aid for wildlife restoration and hunter safety programs. The bulk of the funds, $1,042,258, will go for wildlife restoration. "This distribution is being made" Congressman Johnson said, "according to a formula based on hunting license holders and the area of each state." There are some 756,975 licensed hunters in California, according to Fish and Wildlife statistics.

Congressman Johnson said these hunters paid $4,255,007 for a variety of permits and licenses last year. Another small force also moved unopposed into Quang Tri combat base two miles northwest of the city.

The base is the former home of the U.S. 1st Brigade, 5th Mechanized Infantry Division. It was turned over to the South Vietnamese one year ago. Despite the apparent disappearance of Communist troops, U.S. advisers said they expected a tough fight ahead.

An estimated 48,000 North Vietnamese soldiers took part in the drive to capture Quang Tri province and the capital on May 1 and the troops are still believed to be in the aia. "We expect to have a hell of a fight there. We expect to have to fight our way all the way in," one U.S. adviser told UPI correspondent Barney Seibert who is accompanying government forces. He stayed in his room to sleep to get ready for the match, scheduled to start at 1 p.m. EDT, and sent his seconds, the Rev. William Lom-bardi and two lawyers, Paul Marshall and Andrew Davis. Lothar Schmid, the official arbiter of the match, said he would need a translation of the Soviet protest before he could act upon it. "What happened was that Spassky lodged a protest against the fact that Fischer did not arrive in time Sunday and he walked out of the meeting," Euwe said.
