ifimntt "tp D2 The Edmonton Journal, Thursday, February 23, 1995 arthtones ace Arden in race for Alberta music awards DAVID HOWELL Journal Music Writer Hi Feeding Like Butterflies, Jessica Schoenberg. Captain Tractor, The Imagineers and P.J. Perry. The Earthtones are nominated as best group, most promising artist, best poplight rock artist and best artist. Their CD To Be Continued is up for best album and the song Daydream is nominated as best single.

The Earthtones are also nominated in the people's choice category, the only ARIA award in which the winner is chosen by public balloting. Arden is nominated for the people's choice award, best female recording artist, best poplight rock artist and best songwritercomposer. Her album Living Under June is up for best album and Cotdd I Be Your Girl is up for best single. Arden was the big winner at last year's ARIA awards and has to be considered the favorite this year. Living Under June is a critical and commercial success in Canada and Arden is on the verge of breaking through in the United States.

Earthtones manager Graham Berkhold, however, isn't grumbling about his group being underdogs. He said the five singers now have something to show for years of hard work. "It's nice to see music industry people nominating a group such as The Earthtones, which has been sometimes categorized too quickly as disposable pop music," Berkhold said. "It's nice to know that your peers do see your music as legitimate, artistic music." Edmund Oliverio, president of the 500-member recording industry association, said this year's crop of nominees is the strongest in the awards' nine-year history. The awards honor artists in Alberta, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories who released recordings between Oct.

News Zhivago earned writer an Oscar The Canadian Press London British playwright Robert Bolt, a master of historical epics who won Hollywood Oscars for Dr. Zhivago and A Man For All Seasons, has died aged 70.

his agent said Wednesday. In a golden era for British film, he and director David Lean, who died in 1991, took Hollywood by storm during the 1960s with a string of hits including Lawrence of Arabia and Ryan's Daughter. Bolt, a workaholic who suffered a serious stroke 16 years ago that left him partially paralyzed, was adapting Jung Chang's best-selling autobiography Wild Swam when he died. A master dramatist who brought the quintessence of other writers to the screen, Bolt had just completed a film about the young Richard Nixon for U.S. television.

He died Monday night at his home near Petersfield, southwest of London, watching television with his wife, actress Sarah Miles, whom he married, divorced and remarried. They were surrounded by their cats and dogs, his secretary said. "He was so cheerful and robust and he was working right up till the end," secretary Julie Nightingale said. "It was extremely peaceful. There was no pain." Felled in 1978 by a stroke while working with Lean on Bounty, a version of the story of an 18th- century mutiny, Bolt recovered to resume the project and also completed the screenplay of the highly-acclaimed Tlie Mission in 1986.

"I really did everything possible to ensure that I had the stroke," he said later, describing his appetite for whisky, wine and 80 cigarettes a day. But he fought back afterward with characteristic determination, saying: "I decided I couldn't just face the wall and die." Fort Edmonton Park Parties!
