Columbia Gas Electric Corporation has been expanding rapidly In the past two years The olds company was possessed of wide holdings of natural gas supplies and also with facilities for the dlstrlbu tlon'of electric power and light Mer ger with the Ohio uel corporation in 1926 extended these facilities and ef fected economies in operation that are now becoming important factors in record of earnings company subsidiaries are now grouped In five major divisions with headquarters In Charleston West Virginia Columbus Cincinnati and Dayton Ohio and Pittsburg Pennsylvania These divi sions serve approximately 985 com munities with a population of over 5000000' At the end of 1927 there were 930311 gas customers and 285 105 electric customers During 1928 further acquisitions have been maffi which have added 75000 consumers In other Ohio cities Also the generat ing capacity this year is being In creased by 100000 kw An Important department of the corporation Is the manufacture of casinghead gasoline of which 39000000 gallons were pro duced last year WOOLEN pea cockish colors we sell them by the foot but they deliver coziness by the yard Columbia Gas fc Electric corpora tion has safeguarded Its future by plans for the careful development of its natural gas reserves and the mix ing of natural and manufactured gas at important consuming points tn this way it has avoided the dangers which some natural gas companies face owing to difficulty in estimat ing the length of life of natural gas wells Also Its electric business Is growing In proportion and last year amounted to about 24 per cent of the total business Company operates some street railways but this is only a minor portion of its activities Earnings for the first six months of 1928 amounted to 6428 a share on the common stock after allowing for pre ferred dividend requirements This was a much better showing than In the first half of 1927 when $317 was earned This improvement reflects the expenditures made last year in the betterment of Its properties ull benefit from these property expendi tures moreover has not yet been rea lized Net profits In 1927 were re duced by the extraordinary expenses but the gross business of the company has constantly expanded Ultimately the work which has been done in the corelation and co ordination of newly acquired properties will result In far greater savings than already have been made Likewise simplification of the capital structure will gradually result In a reduction In fixed charges clos to $2000000 a year The 6 per cent preferred stock may be regarded as a good investment is sue Common stock has had a sub stantial rise from a lowof 89 1 2 to current price of around 126 It is paying $5 dividend A rumor has re cently circulated that tne common stock may possibly be spilt up cn a two for one exchange no definite confirmation of this Is forthcoming however and It is unlikely anyway that consideration of such action would be taken before the first of the years if indeed It is planned at all Other rumors have been heard la con nection with a possible consolidation with United Gas Improvement al though of course nothing definite can be obtained from officials along this line It Is nevertheless true that Columbia Gas Electric would make an excellent addition to some of the larger utility systems While the stock may have temporarily over discount ed company's prospects by Its advance it has very attractive long pull pos sibilities INDIANA PIPE LINE HAS GOOD PROSPECTS In connection with the improve ment in the oil Industry certain pipe line companies are in a position to benefit substantially One of the most favorably situated is Indiana Pipe Line which forms an Important link in a large system serving the Lima Indiana oil fields Likewise its trunk lines are an Important part of a transcontinental system Net earnings last year were $985 a shore which covered the regular $6 dividend and extra dividends by 1 1 2 times Earn ings so far this year are about the same as last although any variation In final figrues Is more likely to be higher than lower A special divid end $5 a share has been declared pay able November 15 1928 Company Is In a strong financial position As a long pull investment giving a good dividend return and with ultimate possibilities of substantial apprecia tion Indiana Pipe Line stock appears attractive ent although more than that piled In to see a crucial double header between the Yankees and Phila delphia At hl tics late in the recent campaign Although no definite plans have been made Ruppert hopes eventful ly to have the field completely cir cled by a covered stand meanslhith told interestingly if Three packed houses witnessed the opening of rank Smith's "Nonsense at the Majestic yesterday The satisfactory acceptance was evi denced by the continued applause of the audiences In fact it was so well received that should an outsider happen to be passing the door he would have
