the special from participation in intercollegiate con tests abolition of the seasonal in favor of the full time coach who shall rank as a member of the faculty summary dismissals of a coach who lends report tha gained wide cir culation takes Hellmann and two pther Detroit players (still to be de cided upon) to the Philadelphia Athletics for Edwin Rommel Connie great knuckle ball pitcher However one tact that has not teen published is that Heilmann is kinder a two year'contract to the De troit club and this contract runs through the season of 1923 Hellmann demanded $15000 last winrer The player and rank Navin president of the Detroit club finally agreed upon a two year con tract at $12500 a season Published reports said the contract was for one year and that gave grounds for the various rumors involving Hellmann in trades Heilmann was the batting champ ion of the American League in 1921 He finished fourth this year with GVClAtH (IT I shoulder in a collision at first base late in August and was out for the remainder of the season This gave rise to another rumor that Hell mann's playing days were over Heilmann after spending some time in a hospital in NVashington was brought to Detroit where his collar bone was broken by surgeons and reset He did not leave the hos pital until a week before the season closed but the injury has entirely mended COLLEGE SPORTS ARE IMPROVING ATLANTA Ga Dec 8 "College athletics are improving but there is a tendency toward the commercial Dr Sanford president of the Southern Intercollegiate Conference told members of that body here to night at their second annual meet ing He attributed much of the im provement to efforts of alumni Dr Sanford sketched the history of athletics In southern schools and re commended that departments of physical education should be adopted bv all conference colleges and athletic coaches elevated to membership on the faculty He discountenanced semi profes sional baseball for collegians and re comended that such players should be denied the privilege of participat ing in college athletics The conference disapproved at its session tonight a motion to make all colleges comply ith conference rules before scheduling contests with I institutions It also voted down a proposition to limit the basketball season to twelve games Members ran into a snag when the question of increasing brought tion from
