1-P TlK tee: April 7, Snead, Nicklaus Ride Hot Streaks Into Masters Palmer Rules As 6-1 Favorite; Field Of 84 Opens Competition AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) Sam Snead and the 20-year-old U. S. Amateur champion, Jackie Nicklaus, rode (he hottest streaks into today's opening round of the 24th Masters golf tournament. A field of 84--67 professionals and 17 amateurs who compose the world's "who's who" of the fairways--starts the four-day, 72-hole test at 10 a.m.

(EST) over the blooming acres of the Augusta National course. Snead, involved in a television controversy, warmed up for a go at his fourth Masters title by winning an inaugural preliminary tournament over the No. 3 course in 23, four under par. He's been playing like a man on a rampage. Nicklaus, a tow-head Tarzan Columbus, Ohio, rocked the game's elite with a brilliant final 'practice round of 66.

odds of 6-1. The year's leading money winner with and four tournament victories on his belt, the young, bull- like pro from Ligonier, is the solid pick of most players and spectators. Behind Palmer in favoritism is Ken Venturi, the popular San Francisco youngster who has been a sentimental choice since he let the Masters crown slip away in 1956. Venturi is an 8-1 bet, followed by Snead and Gary Middlecoff, the latter experimenting with a new driver. Ben Hogan and Mike Souchak are bracketed at 12-1, followed Dow Finsterwald and South Africa's Gary Player at 15-1.

A foreigner never has won this prized event but the poised 25- year-old South African said in clipped accent: "With a break here and there, I think I could do it" There are 10 foreigners in the select field, including the always formidable Stan Leonard of Canada; a trio of Australians--Norman Von Nida, Kel Nagle and Bruce Crampton--; Harry Weetman of England, Mario Gonzales of Brazil: Angel Miguel of Spain and Harold Henning and Denis Hutchinson, South Africa teammates of Player. After almost a week of drenching rains, the weather broke perfectly for the tournament, with warm sunshine and crisp temperatures promised for the entire weekend. The wind always blows. This time it has more bite. Snead appeared not to be too concerned by the fuss raised over his now celebrated loss to Mason Rudolph in one of the world championship golf series carried by NBC.

Snead admitted today he purposely lost the match after discovering--to his dismay--that he had 15 clubs, one over the limit, in his bag more than midway through the contest. He four-puttsd the 16th hole and three-putted the 18th in the match at Bermuda, filmed last December and shown on national screens last Sunday. "It was all 1 could do to save the show," Snead said, Snead banged around the course in 72 Wednesday but knocked in five birdies. He seemed able to score- when he needed to do so. High, when Second Baseman Dickie Winstead scored his second run of the afternoon in the bottom of seventh inning here yesterday. Reidsville took what appeared to be a commanding lead by scoring all of its runs in the first suffering from a pulled side muscle. This latest mishap is one of a series that has kept the tail boy from reaching the heights his ability seemed almost certain to insure. Larsen never won more than 11 games in any season for the Yankees. On the other hand, he never had a losing year under Manager Casey Stengel'until 1959 when he won six and lost seven.

Stengel put his case plaintively ast summer when Larsen failed aim' in Kansas City when the Yankees were trying desperately stop a long losing streak: "I don't know what I'm going io do with him. He pitches four innings like a world beater and then I notice he eases up and starts missing the plate. When'I ask him if his arm hurts he says it is tightening up a little but will work out in another inning. But it doesn't and 1 have to take turn out. As well as he hits and runs, maybe he ought to be an outfielder.

I've asked him about it but he doesn't say much." Apparently Casey decided what tie should do with Larsen trade torn to the A's. Elliott said his starting corps is subject to changes. Leon Dishman finally came in to snuff out the fire and pitched hitless ball until he gave way to Wray Ware in the seventh. Dishman was credited with the win.

New Rules Apply To Tonight's Tag Re-Match Bout There must be a decision one way or another when wrestlers Don McClarity and Bob Boyer meet southern tag team Larry Hamilton and "The Great Bolo" a third time on tonight's pro mat program at City Auditorium. Under special rules, there can be no disqualification and there is no time limit on the bout, according to the promoters.
