I IS Neighbors, Feb. 4-10. 1990 Healthy diet reduces heart disease risk Upton By LIZ REES Neighbors Reporter It's time to get smart about heart diseases, says Phyllis Hodges, a nutritionist with the Edmonton Board of Health. About 1,000 people die of heart diseases every year in Edmonton, but with appropriate lifestyle changes that number can be greatly reduced in the future, she says. "A lot of people think, 'itU never happen to me," but it's easy to fool yourself.

Although it's impossible to change some of the risk factors that can lead to a heart attack, such as age and genetics, Hodges says certain changes in lifestyle can lower the risk. Eating sensibly is one way to prevent heart disease. "Most people could benefit from a reduction in fat and an increase in fibre, Hodges says. People can reduce fat in the diet by trimming meat and cutting down on things like sour cream, salad dressing, and butter or marg-erine. Cutting down on foods such as cheese, potato chips, and cookies and cakes will also decrease the overall fat intake, she says.

To increase fibre in the diet, Hodges recommends eating high-fibre cereals, whole grain bread, legumes, and vegetables and fruit. "Eat whole-grain pastas, and incorporate fibre into recipes. Have fruit for dessert instead of baked goods." SPa ii'Un far tI T- j-. NT I. I HP 111 Another healtVy choice to make is removing the salt shaker from the table.

"Most people get much more salt than they need" Regular exercise can also lower the nsk of a heart attack. "Try to incorporate exercise into daily life, such as walking to the store and cycling work. Find as many ways as you can to integrate it into what you do." Regular exercise will also lead to loss of excess weight, which also makes a person more susceptible to a heart attack, says Hodges. Stress management will also lead to a healthier heart. "Find ways to manage your stress.
