A LEGAL TXAGEDY. lira. Addie B. Richardson, of Savannah, is at last free from tain orbit in which to move, we are the more deeply -impre'B'eed, when we aee the adapation of construct- the mailed hand of the law. When the case was handed to the jury it took only thirty-five minutes to report her innocent of the charge murdering her husband, two years ago.

A dramatic scene followed the announcement. Her brother-in-law, John D. Richardson, clasped her in his arms. He was the firat to reach her aide. Her family and iflf staunch friends, with tears and joicings, surrounded her.

Her at- had defended her valiantly and the attorney for the proaecu- tion, declared, prior to the crime, 'I he had never heard a breath her character. a The question now ia, who shall stand sponsor for the murder of a woman's fair name, of ft woman's broken heart? Who is to bear the responsibility of hounding on the dogs of the law, to the undoing of; an already sorrowing soul? Can the verdiot of "Not Guilty" atone lor all the misery that has come to that unhappy woman, and the innocent children? Does it make fair tarnished reputation? Does it erase the false aspersions of legal charges? it heal the wounds made by the inquisition of public opinion? Yes "Not gailty, your Honor." and she is free to irag out the remnant of her days under the protection ef the law. The world makes light of false suspicions, false charges and unjust punishments. When crime When been committed it must have sacrifice of blood, and in its eagerness, destroys the innocent with the guilty. Is it not high time that the sober, cool-headed, guardians of the law tojk counsel with themselves and extended to the helpless and the innocent, the protection of their strength.

THE HEART OF THE PEOPLE. If anyone has any doubt that the grtat heart of the is merciful and just, the promptitude with which the public has respond- i to the appeals of the destitute ion to ihe mode of life contemplated. We most devoutly believe that women have a sphere, and that it is far and away, the greatest, moat beautiful and most beneficent that God faas created. He has made her queen of the realm, and placed on her head, the Crowa of Empire and on her hand this signet ring, as His direct and recognized coadjutor. But things have been jostled out of their proper order.

We gee the royal robes laid aside, the crown removed, and the ring re turned to the casket, and with whip and spur, she is making a mad dash into the reservation sel apart for man's activities. Now what are some of the serious results? That which stands out most prominently, is the displacement oi men in their natura' lines of work. Thousands of young men arc daily seeking in vain for employment and cannot find it because the places are filled by wo. men and girls. And ae a conse quence of discouragement and idle ness, they drift into evil habits and become lost to the world as an economic force.

On the other hanc the home loses its legitimate support and is gradually transformed into the boarding house. What ia the basis of this change. Evidently cheap labor. Employers do not pay women and girls the game for work as they have to pay men. Whj? Because it is largely unskilled labor, and therefore it is cheap.

Logically inferior. In England and largely in the cities of France and America, the women have abandoned the home work, for wage places and ihe men are drifting into places formerly occupied by women, especially in the home. There is a great demand men cooks. They are more expensive, but are much superior. Wby? A man must serve an apprenticeship and get an endorsement, before he is employed.

Women seem to thing such knowledge comes by inspiration and if the unfortunate mistress escapes can be given, or in fact exists. It smacks too much of the work of he "fixer." In plain words It leeoas to have been done in the in- of Judge Cooney the present ncumbent, and handicap any other person in the district who may Have congressional aspirations. These gentlemen ought to remember that the "fixer" is unpopular in Missouri just now, and a little is as much as the people will stand. 11 We are not unfriendly to Judge Cooney, but if this matter is allowed to stand, we propose to work to the best of our ability to rebuke this violation of fair dealing, to the end that the 'fixer' and the one for whom the 'fixing' ie done shall be eet down on hard. The committee may not have intended any wrocg, but the effect will be the same "The coEomitteemen from Green, Polk and Lafayette voted against the snap convention, and, of course, we mean nothing herein contained for them.

"Ae we have said, there has not been one valid reason given in favor of snob an early date. "The committee should meet at once and change the date, or there will be a result that was far from being contemplated by the fixers." above editorial is especially applicable a condition ot aflbirs that exists at present in this congressional district. D. DANtEY From Messenger to Chief Successful Career. Saturday of this week will be observed as Candlemas day in the Catholic church, preceding the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin on the following day. The observances to which the day owes its name, the lighting of candles and the eonsecra tion of the candles which are to be used during the year for ecclesiastical purposes have an emblematical reference to the prophecy of Simeon that should oome the Gentiles." The institution of the feast dates back to the reign of Jestinian, and the year 542 ia sometimes fixed upon as that of its first celebration. Since the first of January there is a visible tendency of Moberly people to once more become the owners of their homes. Not that feuoh a desire is ever absent in the minds of well balanced, sound thinking people, but it has lain dormant in Moberly for quite a ppell, seeming to await the lowest ebb in the valaes of resident prop- tivals held in February, the word itself denoting purification.

February being- in olden times the month in which the purification of of the people took place. The Feast of the Purification, or the presentation of Christ in the temple, is said to have been instituted also in the reign of Justinian at about the same time as the candlemas feast, and was prob ably intended as substitute ior the pagan festival of Juno febru- ata, held on the first of February. It was called by the Greeks the feast of the meeting of the Lord by Simeon in the temple, and was regarded as one of the testa Dominica, or, feasts in honor of the Lord. It was called "the purification" in reference to the Jewish law which ordained that the first-born child should be holy to the Lord, and that forty days after the birth the mother ehonld present herself in the temple and make an offering ot a lamb, or two young turtle doves, or young pigeons for her Courier Poet. cases.

The newspaper man made a mental note of these facts as he desired to know more about this Mexico boy who had made his way to the top of the ladder in his profession.

After he had finished his testimony he was approached by the scribe and asked some questions regarding his career. He gave them in their chronological order and they are: "My name is W.
