The Edmonton Journal, Thursday, July 21, 1994 City Digest Kelly Gordon. Strachan is considered violent and dangerous and shouldn't be approached, he said. Kumpula isn't considered dangerous. One man is believed to have been handcuffed while the other might have been Inmates jump from van in downtown area Two inmates jumped from a RCMP prisoner transport van Wednesday near 101st Street and Kingsway Avenue. Michael Andrew Strachan, 36, and Jason Kumpula, 18, were with a group of other prisoners when they managed to get the door open and get out of the moving vehicle, said city police information officer Strachan able to shed his cuffs, he said.

They'd been in court Wednesday and were being moved back to K- Division, Gordon said. They were then to be sent back to the jails where they were serving time. Gordon didn't know what they were serving time for or where. Kumpula is Caucasian, five-foot11, 180 pounds, with green eyes. He was wearing a red shirt.

Strachan is Caucasian, six feet tall, 170 pounds, with collar-length hair and a heavy moustache. He wore a black leather jacket and red shirt. Woman flees car after sexual assault Stony Plain RCMP are searching for a suspect in the sexual assault of a city woman who dived into a ditch from a moving car. RCMP said the incident occurred early Wednesday just north of Stony Plain on Campsite Road. Police were told that a woman was seen falling from a moving car.

Investigations revealed that a 24-year-old woman had been picked up in downtown Edmonton and taken to the rural area where she was sexually assaulted. She leapt from the car because she feared for her safety, RCMP said. The woman was treated in hospital for minor injuries and released. The suspect, who was driving a red Camaro or Trans Am with retractable headlights and black interior, is described as a Caucasian male, six-feet tall, 200 pounds, and about 40 years old. He had straight brown, shoulder- length hair parted in the middle.

He was wearing a white cowboystyle shirt and dark dress pants. Ed Tel backers may take court action today The Friends of Ed Tel are heading to court in a continued attempt to block the sale of the publicly owned telephone company. The opposition group is seeking a court ruling on how big or any part of the company the city is allowed to sell, said group spokesperson Les Steele. City council gave its initial approval of the sale earlier this month. Friends of Ed Tel will argue provisions in the provincial Telecommunications Act prohibit the city from selling off Ed Tel.

They say the act allows only the "exchange" to be sold. "The exchange is where the equipment and phone lines are," Steele said. It may not include the cellular phone network, directory service or any other spinoff! services operated by the company. Ald. Brian Mason, who also opposes the sale, said those are very lucrative components of the company.

The city could have a tough time finding a buyer if the courts ruled they couldn't be sold, he said. An affidavit sworn by Friends of Ed Tel supporter Bill Stephenson objecting to the sale should be filed in court by the end of today. Steele said this court action is only the first of many his group will consider to prevent the sale. Ed Tel officials could not be reached for comment. Bank robbery suspect arrested at roadblock A massive dragnet set up outside the city Wednesday led to the arrest of a bank robbery suspect.

Two Tofield RCMP officers, hearing a call that a Vegreville bank had been robbed about 9:45 a.m., set up a roadblock at secondary highway 834 and Highway 16. Other roadblocks had been set up by Vegreville, Two Hills and Fort Saskatchewan RCMP. One minute after the Tofield officers blocked the road, they stopped a 1976 Ford Maverick a car similar in description to the getaway vehicle. Robert Lynn Ehret, 39, of Ardrossan, has been charged with robbery.
