Among the groups invited were the Aids Network, Planned Parenthood, the Youth Employment Centre and the Edmonton Police Service. Conference organizer Wanda Vintinner said the groups were invited not only so the students could learn from them, but so they could learn from the students. "We're teaching agencies how to deal with people who are hearing impaired," she said. Vintinner, who works for an advocacy gr oup for deaf people called the Connect Society, encouraged the groups to communicate with deaf people either by talking on paper or by using interpreting services.

Vice-principal Linda Cundy said sometimes the parents of deaf children aren't skilled in using sign language. "The conference was an opportunity to deal with some sensitive areas that might have been missed due to lack of communication in the home." Cundy said between 200 and 500 hearing impaired people in Edmonton use sign language. And she would like to see individual agencies take responsibility for providing interpreters if necessary. The Edmonton Police Service, Planned Parenthood and the Emergency Hotline have been very co-operative on this issue, she said.
