"It's phenomenal," said Aurora Laboy, an official of the provincial disaster-co-ordinating council in Tacloban, capital of Leyte province.

1 She said the affected areas had never been hit by flooding before. Relief and rescue teams toured the disaster area trying to find missing people and retrieve the bodies of those drowned or buried by landslides. The floods spawned by tropical storm Thelma swept away houses along two major rivers some 50 km southwest of Tacloban. Trees lay uprooted, thatched huts were in ruins and hundreds of people carrying pots and clothing on their heads were walking toward higher ground early today, followed by their pigs and other livestock. Worst hit was the coastal town Ormoc, west of Tacloban and 530 km south of Manila, where officials said at least 75 people died.

Thirty were reported dead inland around Burauen. "The current was very strong. Some of the people swept away were inside their houses All I could see was vast devastation," said Burauen Mayor Edgardo Enerlan. The stormy weather forced Imelda Marcos, who returned to the Philippines Monday from exile in the United States, to cancel a trip to her home province Leyte, a spokeswoman said.
