Keycon Construction Specialties Ltd. IBI Group, Architects, Engineers, Planners, has been the prime consultantarchitect on the Hotel Macdonald since 1980.

In the intervening 11 years, IBI has been involved in preparing a number of different designs and programs for the renovation of the Hotel. The original program proposed the demolition of the 1951 annex and Eldorado ballroom (the "box" the Mac came in), to renovation of the historic wing of the Hotel with the addition of a new 200-room wing to the south side of the building. In 1985, CN Hotels proceeded with the renovation of the historic 1915 wing. The program, similar to what has just been completed, proceeded into construction with the demolition of the Annex in the spring of 1986, and with the interior renovation work on the suite floors of the Hotel, though this was put on hold when it was decided to sell the hotel chain. With the purchase of Hotel Macdonald by Canadian Pacific Hotels and Resorts, IBI Group and its consultant team, including Read Jones Christoffersen as structural engineers, Hemisphere Engineering as mechanical engineers, and Morgan Dowhan Engineering as electrical engineers, were retained to continue the work begun for the previous owners.

With the designation of a number of the rooms on the lower floor of the Hotel, including the Empire Ballroom, Confederation Room, Wedgwood and Lobby, it was necessary to work within the constraints set by the City. The lead provided by the design of these rooms was then faithfully carried throughout the remainder of the Hotel. There were a number of issues in regard to the structural, mechanical and electrical systems in the Hotel. Read Jones Christofler-sen carried out a thorough structural review of the building to determine its capacity to accommodate the changes proposed. All new heating, ventilating, air conditioning, plumbing and power and telephone systems were provided, in lieu of using the existing systems.

The Heritage bench, with its ornately styled castings and oak seating is reminiscent of the late 1800s, in keeping with the style of the grand old hotel.
