B4 The Edmonton Journal, Saturday, February 2, 1991 El Ski School a wretched lesson in how not to make films ram MARC HORTON Journal Staff Writer Popcorn (No stars) Director Mark Herrier Starring: Jill Schoelen. Ray Walston, Dee Wallace Stone, Tony Roberts Thaatram Eaton Centre Cinemas, Cinemas 6 Classification: Mature. Warning: not recomnedned for younger children what he so obviously wants take moving pictures of people doing it. We just wish he'd get on with it so that his work can be shown in places where it belongs in those same dark, dank basements and not on movie screens. It is tasteless and dumb and fails to even have interesting shots of people skiing in a movie that's supposed to be about skiers.

The director has a big future shooting movies in dark, dank basements where he can finally do Ski School (No stars) Director Damian Lee Starring: Dean Cameron, Tom Breznahan, Stuart Fratkin Thaatraa: Capitol Square 4, Gateway 8 Classification: Mature. Warning: suggestive scenes. video store. Lots of boobs the biggest is the one behind the camera bounce around this movie. Lots of beer is drunk Labatts, in fact, because this is a movie that was shot at Whistler.

It seems the women in this movie can't wait to get oft" the slopes, out of their down-filled ski duds and into the nearest hot tub, where they frolic with the men in this movie who can't wait to get off the slopes, out of their down-filled ski duds and into the nearest hot tub. Ski School is as plotless as it is witless, full of jokes about breasts, penises and homosexual activities. Edmonton Halfway through watching this sexist and wretched film that makes the Police Academy series look like high art, I figured out what director Damian Lee was trying to do. He was trying to make a porn movie but lacked the talent. That's true.

This man, a former member of Canada's Olympic Ski Team according to studio publicity, is playing around the edges of the school of film-making which uses seedy motels as sets. Popcorn packs no punches If Lee had gone just a tad further, he would have had one of those movies which are relegated to the adults-only section of the MARC HORTON Journal Staff Writer HIS STORY WILL TOUCH YOU, EVEN THOUGH HE CANT. "'Alice' is a delight. Alien Co. make us believe that fairy tales can still happen? -DAVID ANSEN NEWSWEEK "Thumbs up! A smart funny movie! -ROCER EBERT edward 5055ORHAND5 PARENTAL GUIDANCE 2ND MONTH 1 0 Cc ft SNEAK 0 'Alice calls for celebration.

Every member of the virtually all-star cast is super? -VINCENT CANBYTHE NEW YORK TIMES "Terrific. 'Alice returns Allen to his best comic territory? -RICHARD SCHICKELTIME Edmonton Popcorn, which is a movie about movie within a movie, has a notable scene where director Mark herrier shows uncommon courage. While at no point does he show Ait, originality or talent, there is ne brief moment where the man, baplessly awkward throughout the est of the film, indicates that he's iot a toughness of spirit. The scene in question? He has a disgruntled audience in movie theatre throw popcorn, bars and soft drink at the screen. Gutsy stuff indeed from a movie-maker who lives in the cinematic equivalent of a glass house.

Gutsier still when you consider ihe suggestibility of people who are attracted to movies which suggest: "Popcorn Buy a bag Go home in a box." After all, if they're tempted by an advertising campaign like that, it won't take much to push them over the edge and have the screens at your local cineplex splattered with Diet Coke and sticky popcorn. While I'd be the last person to encourage any kind of messy audience response, I would encourage them to walk out. Go see Hamlet. Play with the kids. Talk to your girlfriend.

Read a book. The movie does leave me with a question, however. What is Tony Roberts, an actor who appeared in Serpico and was once part of the Woody Allen repertory company, doing in a piece of work like this? He plays a film professor at one of those California universities where you get credits for going to movies. The school administration has obviously cottoned on to the fact it's all a scam and has cut his budget. His solution is to hold a festival of horror films at a soon-to-be-demolished theatre in order to raise money.

Naturally, the theatre he and his class choose is haunted, the site of a bloodbath some 15 years earlier where a hippie film-maker wiped out his entire family and set the theatre on fire. Except there are a couple of survivors of the blaze, including two members of the profs film studies class and, well, no one's gonna get out alive this time. It's standard enough stuff, but Herrier misses an opportunity to do clever send-ups of those schlocky horror movies from the '50s. It's true that he tries, and none of it quite works, resulting in a schlocky horror movie to start the '90s. But, hey, don't throw your popcorn, okay?
