Mr Schoolfield who was born 11 city 1n September 1890 had lived virtually all of his life here un tl) two years ago Ribbons Buttons (Continued from Page T) from the north for twenty four hours1 Everything burned In the de bris jeutUrday was to be seen a num ber of 'Ku Klux Klan robes Tho vaudeville company of George li Gardner playing here last week lost everything they had The personal clothing and igs paraphernalia was in trunks at the station and every thing was burneil 'this representing no small los iMb the individuals Several sacks of rftiill were destroy ed At tho postoffleo it snld was lust night that none of this was incom ing mall to Danville but for the most part was mail waiting to be sent to Norfolk Superintendent A Shelton was asleep in his private cur almost in front of the station when the fire broke out He was on his way to Washington to atslst in restoring or 'der out of chaotic conditions An engine quickly pulled his car and others in danger from tho heat out of way Early yesterday morning the South ern ordered lumber and soon con structed a new ticket office Sydnor DeButts chief clerk for Su perintendent Shelton said this morn ing that so far as the company had been able to learn tho fire started from wiring in the attic Ten days ago the insurance inspector was in Danville and tvent over the work and found It satisfactory The loss ac cording to company officials will be about $40000 which does not include the amount which will have to be paid out in Claims for burned bag gage According to Mr DeButts engln eers who have viewed the walls find that they are safe and it is the in tentlon of the railway company to put the building back in the same location and as it was at the time of the fira with possibly a few bene ficial changes "As to insurance it' is said that it is covered by $42000 which found 1s eat aside by the company which car ries its own risk According to rail way officials a freight train engineer first sa wa spurt of flame in the roof and pulled his whlsle cord for a sustained blast which he intended as an alarm About the same time burning embers fell through to the first floor and then those In the build ing became aware of tire About $90 in currency in the baggage room was destroyed by Are Nearly all of the ticket office money was saved Pos sibly $70 in currency was recovered from the debris Some of this was silver money which had melted and run together freak of the fire Was revealed In the debris of the res taurant While the was enough to melt the coffee urns when the re frigerator was pulled out of Shea Trolley Service Is Re established (Continued from Pngs 1) of the snow etorm yesterday It thawed rapidly nil day until sundown when It froze making sidewalks and streets today more treacherous than nt any time since tfru ig storm Tho sidewalks have been generally speak ing sufficiently to enable podestrithis to walk dryshod Tho city ordinance pi ovides that after i snow each property holder shall clear the sidewalk opposite tho property immediately in order that the snow shall not be packed down tight by pausing feet Notwithstanding the snow tho at tendance at the Sunday schools and at the churches was excellent and a good many young men ami women made a special effort to be on hand at service during the day Traffic on the streets was heavier than at any time since Thursday al though driving an automobile was no easy task and was rendered uncom fortable duo to the hummocks of snow which developed at many points about the streets It is already realized that the re cently laid smooth paving on both sides Of the struct car tracks on Main street has been badly damaged On the northbound track the damage seems to have been especially Large cakes of asphaltic coating have come up and the entire surtace is three or four inches higher than the street car track This believed to have been due to snow finding its way under the surface to the bricks and in this way forcing up the upper surface This will be a heavy expense to the city The peril of more roofs caving in was believed today to be parsing with th melting of the snow gradually re lieving the burden of the snow laden roofs The last roof to cave in was on Sun day afternoon about two o'clock when a portion of the roof over the hall of the Junior Order United American Mechanics located on Main street fell in ortunately there was no one In the building at the time The noise of the crash at tracted members of the fire depart ment across the street and they went to the hall on the third floor and found a portion of the roof covering an area of about 20 by 30 feet caved under by the weight of the snow The part of the root across the hallway did not fall this being supported by the petition between the two sections ot the structure City Engineer Linville had a force of men working all through the night removing snow from Main street Last night the high banks in the gutters were carried away in trucks and dumped into the river He will continue this work every night and hopes to have the busi ness section of town cleared by the middle ot the week Miss Ella tValdron Dies At Hospital Miss Ella
