He shouldn't be canned. He should be canonized. Wally Kirk, program manager at CITV, says The Simpsons locally has drawn several negative calls and one negative letter, but the response by far has been favorable.

Several episodes, notes Kirk, have had positive messages. In one, a guilt-ridden Homer apologized to Marge (and in the process, women everyhwere) after going to a stag party that featured a stripper. In another, Marge and Homer were drawn closer together after Marge contemplated having an affair with her Casanova bowling instructor. Awwww. So you see? The Simpsons isn't B.B.

There was one episode in which he drew a picture of principal Skinner on the school wall with the words "I am a weiner," causing Homer and Marge to make a trip to the principal's office with their son. As a result, Bart was sent to an institute for smart kids because the school psychiatrist determined that Bart's recalcitrant behavior was so recurrent that he must be a genius who is bored with school. Now, a school principal wants to ban Bart Yes, down in beautiful Ballville Township, Ohio, elementary school principal Bill Krumnow has asked students not to wear Bart Simpson T-shirts. He says the unruly star of the animated TV series The Simpsons sets a bad example for children and doesn't want to see Bart the brat celebrated in his school. Last week, after consulting with teachers, Krumnow asked students over the school's public-address system not to wear Bart Simpson T-shirts, specifically one with Bart's mug on it that says "Under-achiever and proud of it, man." The shirt is part of a line of Simpsons merchandising that next to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is fast becoming one of the hottest things going in the U.S.

For all of their bickering and sloveness, the "family from hell" really love each other. For cartoon characters, they are the only real people on TV. The only unfortunate thing about the show is that we can't get Simpsons merchandise here.

Newsweek magazine was honored in the outstanding print feature category for its special edition, 21st Century Family, which included gays and lesbians. John O'Connor, television critic for the New York Times, was cited for outstanding print commentary. Time magazine, nationally, and the News, locally, won awards for most improved coverage of gay and lesbian issues while the Village Voice was cited for best New York area coverage of gay and lesbian issues. At a ceremony to be held later, GLAAD will honor the Los Angeles Times for most improved local coverage. "The media play an important part in formulating society's perception of the gay and lesbian community, and these awards have been created to recognize accurate and positive portrayals by the media," said Craig Davidson, executive director of GLAAD.

Special recognition also was given to: Harvey Fierstein, for the film, Torch Song Trilogy. Bob Hope, for a public service announcement condemning homophobia and anti-gay violence. Or, as Bart would say, "Don't have a cow, man." The Simpsons is wonderful anti-programming that holds the usual TV pieties on domestic life up to much-deserved ridicule. It is satire, plain and simple, and brilliant satire at that. The Simpson family is TV's lunch-bucket brigade, and what Krumnow and all the other do-gooder experts ignore is that Bart makes kids feel good about themselves. Corrupting influence? Hardly. If they'd bother to look below the surface, perhaps they'd see that Bart's message that it's okay to fail once in a while isn't such a bad one.
