Russ White, Mike Herman, Cummings and Doug Flower ran to Valley TDs. Herman, the kicker, connected on all seven extra-point attempts. "'A Kx y. 1 I By DAVE LED30WITZ An explosive offense and a commanding defensive line enabled the Wayne Valley Indians to cruise to victory over the injury-riddled Ramapo Regional Raiders in the North Section 1, Group 3 football playoff final Saturday.

The 49-10 rout gave Wayne Valley its first state title since 1984 and gave coach Fred Keil his sixth championship season. He had three at DePaul, one with West Essex and now two at Wayne Valley. The Indians finished with a 10-0-1 record and the Raiders wound up 8-3. Coach Mike Miello's Ramapo eleven was without six starters who were sidelined by injuries, including senior fullback Joe DeMarco. Tim Pemetti, a tight end on offense, played inside linebacker for the first time.

Wayne Valley took advantage of Ramapo' inexperienced defense to amass over 280 yards rushing and 110 passing. Junior fullback John Klosek led the Indians with 115 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Quarterback Brewer Cummings completed 5 of 7 attempts. When Cummings connected with slot back Russ White on a 58-yard scoring pass in the second quarter, the Indians took a 14-0 lead and had enough points for the victory. But the gaping holes created by the Valley line and the running of Klosek were the keys to the Wayne Valley scoring barrage that made the score 35-7 at halftime.

The Indians played their second-string offense most of the second half. Ramapo's offense was frustrated by the play of Valley tackles Chris Senyk (5-11, 245) and Olaf Gamlen (6-3, 240). Quarterback Evan Zane was sacked four times, three by Senyk and one by Gamlen. When he wasn't sacked, he was forced to hurry his throws. But Zane still managed to compete 8 of 22 attempts for 130 yards.

The Raiders' lone TD came on a 29-yard completion over the middle to wide receiver Mark Evans. Kris Cyr had 37 rushing yards on nine carries. Ramapo's inability to move the ball forced its defense to stay on the field most of the game. The Raiders made the last few seconds of the game interesting when they attempted a 47-yard field goal with :05 remaining. Jim Hagy's kick fell short, but a r4t t.

MARK EVANS Ramapo coach Miello praises team's courage Ramapo High's football team has taken its lumps in the late season, but coach Mike Miello has a great deal of pride in his players. After the injury-ridden Raiders lost to Wayne Valley in the sectional final Saturday, Miello said: "It certainly didn't represent our team today, but it certainly represented the most courageous group of young men I've ever coached. At the beginning of the week, everyone knew the circumstances. But they worked hard and we had a great week of practice." Fifteen of Ramapo's 22 starters played with injuries, and six were sidelined. "We still played with our heads high," Miello said.

"All season, people said we had a great team," the coach said. "No, not a great team but a bunch of kids who wanted to play football. They worked hard to get in position for a league and state championship. "Even though we didn't win them, getting there is a big plus for our program. We're back on our feet and will be for years to come." LEIBOWITZ Photo by Tom Wegman Joe DeMarco, Ramapo High fullbackdefensive back, watches the title game from sidelines on crutches.
