In a letter to Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, the chairman of the two lines, William White took issue with the governor following a message from Rockefeller to President Lyndon Johnson that the immediate consumation of a merger between the New York Central and Pennsylvania Railroad ays- 4-H cooks win awa rds at Walton WALTON--Judging has commenced at the 4.H building on the fairgrounds at the Dela. ware County Fair in Walton.

White pointed out that the In. terstate Commerce Commission has expressed "its opinion" that "in the absence of adequate protection, neither Erie Lacka.

wanna nor Delaware and Hudson could continue to survive as independent carriers in the face of a New York Central-Pennsylvania merger. "With that opinion we agree," White told the Governor. "Adequate protection, in our opinion," he said, "has not been provided. Merger of the Pennsylvania and New York Central provides no assurance that the New Haven would be included in that system However, White a "From the standpoint of industrial development and industries now served by the i Lackawanna and Delaware and Hudson, the survival of these two railroads is probably of as much, if not more, importance to the State of New York and the northeastern section than survival of the New Haven. "It is the position of the DtH and EL that the vastly improved earnings of the Pennsylvania and New York Central permit delay of their proposed merger until the DiH and Erie Lackawanna have been assured of inclusion in the present Norfolk and Western system.

"Consequently," White said, "we regret the considerable concern exhibited by the State of New York for the New and the lack of concern for the Erie Lackawanna and Delaware a Hudson railroads."
