DIAKUN, Katie On November 18, 1989 Mrs. Katie Diakun of Deaths Brian Gavriloff The Journal Neli Jackshaw guided the transition of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton and Ponoka from government control to board status was fortunate to have the opportunity to give something back to the community, because it had given so much to me over the years raising my kids. Neli Jackshaw, Alberta Hospital chairman of the board KAREN SHERLOCK Journal Staff Writer Edmonton For more than seven years, Neli Jackshaw has been doing volunteer work "for a living." She is retiring as chairman of the board for Alberta Hospital, but friends and associates know she'll be anything but retiring in finding another cause to engage her tremendous enthusiasm. "Volunteer work, to me, is a living it keeps me alive and thinking," Jackshaw says in talking about time with the hospital.

She laughs at a comment from some staff members, who told her they know she isn't really retiring, just changing directions. Her retirement from the board this fall is the second in her life. Jackshaw's first career with the provincial social services department spanned 25 years, until 1981. Less than a year later, she was asked to sit on an interim board that would oversee the transition of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton and Ponoka from government control to board status. When she was later appointed chairman of the Edmonton hospital TAKE NO.

010539 PAGE NO. 00002 TIME 23:03 DATE 19-11-89board, she proceeded to turn the position into a full-time job. "I was fortunate to have the opportunity to give something back to the community, because it had given so much to me over the years raising my kids," says the mother of five, grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of four, who was widowed in 1967. And she gave a great deal, says Gordon McLeod, former executive director of the hospital and now an assistant deputy minister for Alberta Health. "Neli was board chairman for seven years at an important time in the life of the hospital.

She gave her heart and soul to the hospital (and) had a sincere interest in providing the kind of service that some people in our society require and provide it at a very high level." McLeod says those who worked with Jackshaw appreciated her good judgement, fairness and honesty, as well as her hard work and passion. She merits a lot of credit for her leadership in the recent completion of a 15-year master development plan for the hospital, says McLeod. The first phase of that a review of administrative -and rehabilitation services, has received government approval and is underway. Jackshaw says the plan's completion was one of the most rewarding experiences of her term. Another great source of satisfaction was her relationship with staff and patients.

"One of the biggest impacts that hospital had on me was seeing the caring and understanding of staff. SUSHI meaning patients will be less likely to "fall through the cracks" of treatment and end up back in hospital are important aspects of that, says Jackshaw. Despite the fact her formal term as board chairman has expired, Jackshaw says she'll never stop encouraging belter understanding of mental illness. The emotion in her voice attests to her conviction. "My wish would be that society as a whole would accept and understand these people less fortunate than themselves.

When I see the treatment of them out there on the streets, it upsets me so much. "We have such a tendency to blame, if people are different. We label; and the only time that label means anything is if somebody close to us ends up in a slot." She notes that one in five Canadians suffer some form of mental illness during their lifetimes. "I feel if people would attempt to understand and accept, these people would have a much better quality of life. That's my goal." Deaths 30 ADAMS, Stanley On Friday, November 17, 1989, Mr.

No jai for former bank worker CATHY LORD Journal Staff Writer Edmonton A former assistant bank manager who pleaded guilty to defrauding the Welaskiwin Bank of Montreal branch of $10,000 has been given a suspended sentence. Laurie Soucy will perform 250 hours of community serv ice during the one-year probation term imposed by Court of Queen's Bench Justice Nina Foster in Edmonton.

The 33-year-old woman, who had an "impeccable reputation" in her community before charges were laid, will not likely offend again, said Judge Foster. "There's no purpose to incarcerate her," said the judge, noting her lack of previous criminal record, guilty plea and obvious remorse. Soucy pleaded guilty to a scheme involving 16 transactions between Jan. 1, 1985 and Mav 1, 1986 at Wetaskiwin's Bank of Montreal. Crown prosecutor Dave Marriott explained that Soucy purchased money orders and traveller's cheques without paying for them.

Two of the transactions involved withdrawals from accounts at the bank. The scheme was uncovered by an internal investigation and the RCMP fraud division. Marriott asked Foster to impose a two- to four-month jail term to reflect the serious breach of trust. "As assistant manager of the bank, she held a great deal of trust," said Marriott. "This fraud was perpetrated over a long period of time and was a fairly involved scheme," said the prosecutor, adding it would have an impact on public confidence in the bank.

"The money was used to support a lifestyle far beyond her means." At the time Soucy was caught, she had paid back most of the money and subsequently made full restitution, court heard. Defence lawyer Ken Sockett said the married mother is extremely remorseful and has suffered a great deal of trauma over the situation. Skin grafts for burn victim, 4 Journal Staff Edmonton While two-year-old Ashley Poland is buried today, another member of the fire victim's family is set to undergo skin grafting. Family member Bryce Poland said Sunday that doctors in the burn unit at University of Alberta Hospital plan to try grafting skin on four-year-old Jesse, who suffered burns to 40 per cent of his body in Thursday's fire. Mike Poland, 23, is still in critical condition at the hospital with burns to 30 per cent of his body and severe lung damage after the fire at Maple Ridge Mobile Home Park, near 17th Street and 63rd Avenue.

"The fluid coming from Mike's lungs is clear now where two days ago it was black," Bryce said. "He's going to be a long while on the mend but every day he's getting better and better." He said the father, while unable to speak because of numerous tubes in his throat, nods in acknowledgement when the family speaks to him. Relief money and supplies continued to pour in Sunday three days after the tragedy. 30 KING (Hidson) Amy On November 17, 1989, Mrs. Amy (Hidson) King of Edmonton passed away.

And the patients themselves it's just fantastic to watch them grow (toward) their goal, a better quality of life. "Many patients have known me by name.

They'd say 'Hi, and give me a hug, welcome me. That means so much more than some high-faluting meeting." Jackshaw began by knowing almost nothing about mental illness. She has learned a tremendous amount with the help of staff, she says, and with learning came understanding and a passionate desire to spread the understanding far and wide. Jackshaw says that while she has seen some improvement in attitudes toward mental illness by government and the public, society still has a long way to go. She sees elements of the hospital's new 15-year plan as critical to that end.

It stresses the need to integrate people with mental illness much more into the community, by offering treatment and support services outside the hospital. ALLEN PANZERI Journal Staff Writer Edmonton Jim Brown was perplexed after calling Air Canada Sunday morning to find out when his son's flight from Toronto was arriving.

And all of it was in French, which Brown doesn't understand. It seems someone pushed the wrong button on the airline's tape recorder, deleting the English version of the arrivals and departures information. "I thought as soon as the French version ended, the English one would come on," said Brown. His son Trent is a member of the Alberta Golden Bears football team and was in Toronto being named to the Canadian Interuni-versity Athletic Union's all-star team. "But that didn't happen and I don't speak French so I couldn't find out.

I'm sure it was an accident, but it's a sensitive topic these days. I'm not complaining but it is a minor inconvenience if you can't find out when a plane is coming in."
