"It is basically the story of Spike," says Loretta CasteUarin, a Degrassi researcher who co-authored the book withg writer Ken Roberts. "It talks about what it's like to be pregnant, how uncomfortable it can be physically, how it affects you socially, your schoolwork, and your life. It's just her story." CasteUarin had already researched the issue of teen pregnancy for the TV show and used existing scripts to develop Spike's story for paperback. Like the show, the book relates the issue without moralizing. "Kids this age are looking for information, and because the book is told through Spike, it's like having a friend.

It's not an adult telling them what to do." CasteUarin was in town Thursday to promote the book with Amanda Step to, the 18-year-old actress who plays Spike in Degrassi Junior High, which last week won best continuing series at the Gemini Awards. It also won best directing honors for co-producer Kit Hood and best actor honors for Pat Mastroianni, who plays the character of Joey. "Everybody was jumping up and down and screaming," said Stepto. By BOB REMINGTON Journal Staff Writer So what exactly went on in that bedroom between Spike and Shane? If you followed Degrassi Junior High last year, you know they went into a bedroom at Lucy's party and that Spike got pregnant. But, as the song says, no one knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Until now. Degrassi Junior High, first a successful TV series, is being made into a series of paperbacks. Each deals with various characters from the award-winning Canadian program, and like the show, the books are targeted to early teens and pre-teens. The books expand on the personal lives of the characters, but in more detail than what is permitted in prime time. And the one titled Spike (Lorimer $4.95) could be subtitled Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex But Didn't Get To See On TV.

Spike will waste no time grabbing the attention of its young readers. On Pages 6 and 7 we find out that the awkward young couple reaUy didn't mean for things to go as far as they did, and that "the actual sex part" lasted only about five seconds before they were interrupted by a knock on the door. "It didn't even feel good," says Spike's "first-person" account. "It hurt."
