C12 Television THE EDMONTON JOURNAL, BRUNCH, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1988 Degrassi Junior High mirrors kids' real world 1 fm WW WJt By BOB REMINGTON Journal Staff Writer It's another day at Degrassi Junior High and the kids are in the can, doing what school washrooms were made for: visiting, scheming, smoking, preening, grooming, fighting, crying, and generally escaping from whatever teacher happens to be hall cop of the day. The washroom is a major focal point on the Canadian-made TV series that has won two Emmys for its warts-and-all portrayal of life in an inner-city junor high school. Just as you can't do a cop show without occasionally showing a jail cell, you can't do an honest show about school without taking the cameras to the heart of junior high society, the can. It's a minor point, perhaps, but one that underscores the realism of Degrassi Junior High. It wasn't that long ago that All in the Family broke a TV taboo on bathroom scenes by inserting the sound of a flushing toilet.

Today, Degrassi shows shots of the backs of guys standing at urinals. Not everyone is enamored with Degrassi's frankness. Although targeted for teens, it is technically labelled a children's show. PBS, therefore, regularly runs warnings before each episode cautioning parents that the series deals with mature issues. In England, the BBC pulled one episode in which students spread the rumor that one of the teachers was a lesbian, which in turn caused one female student to question her own sexuality.

To its target audience, however, Degrassi Junior High is a welcome slice of reality in an era where wholesome, conservative ethics are the TV norm of the day. Daniel Woods, one of only three adult actors in the Degrassi cast of 46 people, says kids and most adults salute the show for its honesty. "The reaction from students and teachers is that we are very accurate in our portrayals," says Woods, who was in town last week getting feedback from local junior high school students about the show. "There is no question about it. They like us." Degrassi has confronted topics such as birth control, shoplifting, drug abuse, and pregnancy.

On the show this season, an eighth-grade girl is pregnant and still attending classes. That has some people both in the scries and in real life upset. "The producers feel that ignorance is not bliss," says Woods, who plays social science teacher Mr. Raditch. "Their attitude is the more information you have, the better." Degrassi Junior High (Mondays at 8:30 p.m.

on CBC and Thursdays at 8 p.m. on PBS) is a non-network program independently produced in Toronto by Linda Schuyler (pronounced Skyler), a former inner city junior high school teacher. Although open about issues that concern younger teens, Woods says Degrassi stays away from pat answer solutions. "The show doesn't tell kids what to do, it merely presents issues in a truthful way. There's an American series, Facts of Life, in which a 23-year-old woman comes home this season and announces that she has made the decision to lose her virginity.

Our eighth-grade girl made her decision in a much more realistic way. She made it at a party after a couple of drinks. Now, she is living with the consequences. "If our show teaches anything to kids, it's that they are all the same. Everybody is faced with the same choices and problems." Woods, like most adults on the show, generally stays in the background.

Degrassi is done through the eyes of the students, which is fine with Woods. "I'm just one person in this huge repertory company of players. Like everyone else in the cast, I'm giving to a project that is greater than my career. There has never been a star system on Degrassi." X. 1 fV 4 Dan Woods (left) as Mr.
