SCOREBOARD INDEPENDENT RECORD FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 2017 I B3 Bills McCoy says Kaepernick is a distraction Bengals, Bruins have new radio homes With the recent changes to ownership of local radio stations, there willbe new radio homes for Helena High and Capital sports. Helena High games can be heard all season on 950 AM with play-b-play man John Kemper again behind the mic. Capital, meanwhile, willbe on 95.9 FM with longtime announcer Jay Scott back for 2017. Helena High's opener at CMR is at 4:30 p.m. Friday, while Capital will host Great Falls High at 7 p.m.

would immediately fill starting roles. McCoy didn't change his stance when his former Eagles teammate Michael Vick was brought up as comparison, even though a distinction was made that Vick had been convicted of a crime Vick signed with Philadelphia after spending 18 months in prison on dog fighting charges, drawing criticism from some fans who believed he should not be allowed to play pro foot -ball. Kaepernick has not been accused of any crimes. "That's a great example. Take a guy like Michael Vick, who went through all that he went through," McCoy said.

"He's 10 times better than Kaepernick. So you'll deal with that situation, you'll deal with that attention, the media aspect of it the good, the bad attention to it compared to Kaepernick." McCoy shared his views after being asked about his position regarding players protesting the anthems. He supports freedom of speech while adding he believes players can "choose a better platform to state their beliefs." More than 1,000 people crowded the steps of the NFL's midtown Manhattan offices on Wednesday to demand Kaepernick be signed by a team before the start of the season next month. Kaepernick thanked his supporters with a tweet with a photo of protesters raising their right fists in the air. "Thank you to everyone who went out to support yesterday," Kaepernick said.

"My faith has always been and always will be in the power of the people McCoy, entering his third season in Buffalo and ninth in the NFL, has not shied away from speaking his mind. Shortly after being dealt to Buffalo, McCoy criticized his former coach Chip Kelly for making the trade by suggesting the move was racially motivated. He caused a stir in February 2016, when he was involved in a nightclub brawl with off-duty police officers in Philadelphia. No charges were filed after prosecutors said they could not prove who initiated the fight. McCoy's spoke at a time questions have been raised about his future in Buffalo.

The Bills are rebuilding through youth and stockpiling draft picks. Two weeks ago, Buffalo acquired a second- and third-round pick in trading star receiver Sammy Watkins and starting cornerback Ronald Darby in two separate deals. Having heard the trade rumors, McCoy said he's been assured by coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane he's not going anywhere. "I asked them about it and they said it's false," he said. "People make things up." McCoy is instead focused on Buffalo's preseason game at Baltimore on Saturday night and looking ahead to the season opener on Sept.

10. "I feel like I'm one of the key guys here," McCoy said. "I don't want to leave. Buffalo embraced me with open arms and they took me in." JOHN WAWROW Associated Press ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. Bills running back LeSean McCoy isn't surprised Colin Kaepernick has had difficulty finding a job.

And thinks it has little to do with the quarterback's decision to not stand for the anthem last season. Some teams, McCoy said following practice Thursday, might consider it not being worth the "chaos" to take on a polarizing player such as Kaepernick to fill what's likely to be a backup role. "You've just got to look at all sides like, if I'm an owner or the GM of a team, do I want to put him on my team?" McCoy said. "Is he good enough to be on the squad to even deal with everything that's going on?" Kaepernick remains unsigned after opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers after last season. Critics have accused the NFL of punishing the sixth-year player for refusing to stand for the national anthem to protest police brutality against blacks.

"That may have something to do with it, but I think also it has a lot to do with his play," McCoy said. "There's certain players that could be on the team with big distractions, and there's other players that it's not good enough or not worth it." He said it's easier on teams to take on a distraction if it involves a star player such as Patriots quarterback Tom Brady or New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. because, unlike Kaepernick, they MLS EASTERN CONFERENCE Baseball Jacksonville 1 2 0 .333 62 60 Indianapolis 0 2 0 .000 29 48 North Pet PF PA Baltimore 2 0 0 1.000 54 10 Pittsburgh 2 0 0 1.000 37 25 Cleveland 2 0 0 1.000 30 20 Cincinnati 1 1 0 .500 35 42 West Pet PF PA Denver 2 0 0 1.000 57 31 Kansas City 1 1 0 .500 47 39 Oakland 0 2 0 .000 31 44 L.A. WNBA EASTERN CONFERENCE Great Alaska Shootout will end after 2017 MISSOULA The Montana men's basketball team won't play in the 2018 GCI Great Alaska Shootout as previously scheduled. In fact, no team will. The 2017 Great Alaska Shootout, the 40th annual event, will be the final edition of the tournament, the University of Alaska Anchorage announced Thursday. The Griz had agreed to play in the 41st annual event in exchange for Basketball Travelers Inc. paying $70,000 of UM's fees for its trip to Costa Rica Aug.

3-8, according to the game contract between UMandBTI. Ryan Martin, associate athletic department for business operations, had previously said that the athletic department was going to pay for the trip to the Great Alaska Shootout, which he had said "shouldn't cost more than a trip to California." University of Alaska Anchorage chancellor Sam Gingerich said the university can no longer sustain funding for the annual Thanksgiving week tournament. The shootout began in 1978 and is the longest-running regular-season college basketball tournament. The event brought the highest level of basket -ball competition to Alaska, with appearances in the men's bracket by Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA and other perennial national contenders. The 2017 GCI Great Alaska Shootout begins Nov.

21 with the four-team women's tournament. The field includes Binghamton, Tulsa, Maryland Eastern Shore and host Alaska-Anchorage. The men's tournament begins Nov. 22 with Cal Poly, Central Michigan, College of Charleston, CSU Bakersfield, Idaho, Sam Houston State, Santa Clara and host Alaska-Anchorage. Missoulian Ginobili returning for 16th season SAN ANTONIO (AP) Manu Ginobili is returning for his 16th season with the San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs re-signed the 40-year-old Argentine guard Thursday. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Ginobili will become the eighth player in NBA history to spend his entire career with one team and play at least 16 seasons joining Tim Duncan Tony Parker, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, John Stockton, Reggie Miller and John Havlicek. Ginobili averaged 7.5 points, 2.7 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 69 games last season, In 992 career regular-season games, he has averaged 13.6 points, 3.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds. In 213 playoff games, the four-time NBA champion has averaged 14.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists.

Ginobili le Argentina tothe2004 Olympic ti -tie. He and Bill Bradley are the only players win an NBA and Euroleague titles and an Olympic gold medal. Testaverde leaves Miami MIAMI (TNS) University of Miami reserve quarterback Vincent Testaverde, the son of University of Miami legend and Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde, has left the football program, UM announced Thursday. "Vincent approached me this morning and indicated that he felt like he would have more opportunities for playing time at another program," head coach Mark Richt said. "We wish him all the best in his future plans." Richt said on Tuesday, when he announced redshirt junior Malik Rosier as the starting quarterback, that the backups handled the competition beautifully andhe'dbe "shocked" if anyone transferred.

"Everybody has to make choices in life," Richt said. "But I'd be shocked if (current No. 2) Evan (Shirreffs) did that, or any of them. I'd be shocked. They all know they're learning, they all know they're growing, they all know they're get-tingbetter.

They understand there's competition everywhere you go. You can go somewhere for greener grass, well guess what They got a bunch of dudes there too. They know the system. You're going to be behind the 8 -ball if you go somewhere else. I'd be very surprised." Testaverde's father served on the advisory committee that provided UM athletic director Blake James with input during the coaching search that ended with Richt's hiring.

Testaverde a native of Tampa, Fla. is listed as a 6-foot-2, 205-pound redshirt junior and did not see any game action last year after sitting out in 2015. He transferred to Miami from Texas Tech, where he played in one game his true freshman season. At Texas Tech, Testaverde's only game was against Texas on Nov. 1, 2014.

In that game, he completed 15 of 26 passes and threw one interception. He entered the game after freshman quarterback Patrick Mahomes was injured in the second quarter.
