DeAngelo is the cartoonist who gave Superman his true colors back in 1937, when he failed to fly as a black-and-white, daily comic strip character. DeAngelo, who was Employed by DC Comics, said giving Superman his soaring colors was "nothing sensational. The colors had to be pleasant Nobody was ever dissatisfied with them. After the first edition, every other one just followed the same pattern," he said. The real superhero is DeAngelo himself, to hear his children tell it A father of six, DeAngelo reared his three youngest kids alone after the death of his wife, Kathryn, in 1976. His oldest daughter, Phyllis, died the following year. "He was a real Mr. Mom long before the movie or the expression was coined," said DeAngelo's daughter, Rosemary Raugh of Lincroft, N J. DeAngelo created three comic book series of his own: "Basil the Royal Cat," "Buster Crabbe" and "Sparky Watts." Since retirement from CBS seven years ago, where he was manager of the drafting department DeAngelo said he has enjoyed using acrylics to paint landscapes. ft JOB TTTLE: Cartoonist and artist BEST PART OF JOB: "Knowing that you will give some amusement and pleasure to people."
