The noodle-making process involves mixing the dough with her feet, pushing it through a heavy press and hanging the noodles to dry. The money isn't great, but Ermo saves every yuan, counting and recounting her money before tying it up in a cloth bundle.

She's hard-working and ambitious, the only wage earner in a family that includes an aged and impotent husband and a son named Tiger, who much prefers spending time at the neighbor's house watching their color television. Ermo, played by the Mongolian actress Alia, wants a color TV too, and she'll do just about anything to get it. Her story is an Eastern version of keeping up with the Joneses, with the bonus of giving us a look into an exotic society that's undergoing fundamental changes. In this case the Joneses with that spiffy television are a woman named Fat Woman and her husband Blindman, owner-operator of the village's only truck. The relationship between Ermo and Fat Woman is bitter the latter throwing slop water on Ermo's drying noodles.

Revenge occurs when Ermo poisons Fat Woman's pig. But Blindman has other plans. Friendlier than Fat Woman, he and Ermo travel to the city every day together and begin a relationship which slowly develops into a sexual one. He introduces her to the finer things the city has to offer eating in restaurants, finding a job in one, sharing hotel rooms, how to use wrinkle cream. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE (PG5) NIGHTL 7 15.

It's a time when sexuality is becoming a little more open and money is a source of power, even in a village as seemingly backward as Ermo's. "To each according to his work," Ermo is advised when she takes a job in a restaurant She hopes her new job will allow her to save enough money to buy a bigger television than the one owned by Fat Woman. And so what if her husband feels the money should go towards a new house? "A television is an egg. A house is a hen," he repeats, a mantra that is easily ignored by Ermo. And in the end, she'll get her way in this movie that is ultimately about the power of consumerism and the story of a woman who simply won't accept her lot.

She wants more, and she'll get it. Director Xiaowen may use Ermo's character as a symbol for what is happening to China, but he never loses sight of the fact that he's telling an intimate story of the life of a woman who is as stubborn and tough as she is sympathetic. Never heavy-handed, and often funny a Chinese audience regards a televised NFL game as a war until they're informed by a sophisticate that the foreigners are playing basketball this is touching, intriguing film. And Ermo's character is memorable in its seeming simplicity, which hides something very complex and subtle. ITV objects to bid for rival station RICHARD HELM Journal Television Writer Edmonton Edmonton's private TV station has filed its formal opposition to the wolf howling at its door, a market-hungry CanWest Global. In a submission Tuesday to the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission, ITV says if CanWest is permitted to open TV stations in Alberta there will be less spent on Canadian content, a serious lack of programming diversity and "an unbalancing of the Canadian broadcasting system." CanWest Alberta Television, a subsidiary of Winnipeg-based CanWest Global Communications, has a summer hearing date with the CRTC on its second application in two years for the Alberta piece of its long-sought national television network. At the same hearing, Craig Broadcast Systems of Manitoba will present a parallel bid for Alberta stations. Market position is very much the primary concern of the ITV brief.

CanWest owns the rights to most of the top U.S. programs on ITV 12 of the 16 top-rated shows and once it obtains its base in Alberta all those hit shows will be "repatriated," leaving ITV with some gaping holes in its schedule.
