JUfi. A.M. Sports THE EDMONTON JOURNAL. Saturday, January 16. IvkK Truckey in rural romp Reed adds spark to get foursome on playdown roll v.Kt KS l1 Lawrence Truckey had a little trouble with the city boys but he proved to be overpowering against rural competition.

Truckey, who lives near noway, qualified out of the Event in the Edmonton senior men's playdown last weekend at his home club of Jasper Place but he brewed through the Northern Alberta Curling Association playdown this weekend at Vermilion. Curling Truckey and his rink of third Greg Wilkinson, second Lcroy Mahn and lead Dan Lyons won four consecutive games against rural opponents to take the A Event title, 7-3 over Lcn Sorum of Alix on Friday night. The win puts Truckey in his first-ever provincial senior men's championship, which will be held Feb. 17-21 at Fort McMurray. Four teams are left in the running for the Event title, including Hcc Gcrvais' Balmoral rink which upset 1987 provincial finalist Jim Kosh of the Shamrock 7-6 in an extra end Friday afternoon.

Gcrvais is scheduled to play Ted Collinge of Lloydminstcr while Sorum takes on Ken Papley of Beaumont in the other semifinal. In the Event, Kosh, Al Wolff of Jasper Place and Merv Du-fresne of the Crestwood are city rinks still alive. Ken Yarham of the Crestwood was eliminated. PICTURE: Bruce Edwards Don Alexander (left) and Doug Roche get to work with the brooms on a Tom Reed shot Reed foursome qualified for NACA playdowns by emerging out of the Edmonton playdowns Friday By NORM COWLEY Journal Stuff Writer "You're going to sec us in the provincials this year." Don Alexander knows better than to utter such a bold prediction. The multi-talented yet ever-changing team he plays on ha.sn't returned to the Alberta champion-.

ship since it made a sparkling debut in 1984. But Alexander was full of confidence when he quietly made that prophecy Friday at the Derrick. "We're just starting to warm up," he said "We haven't played a lot of games together this year but now we're getting excited." The reason? Tom Reed, the for- mcr two-time Alberta champ, may be the piece that was missing from the puzzle the last few years. The wily veteran skipped the rink of third Mark Johnson, second Doug Roche and lead Alexander to an A Event zone out of the Edmonton Area Curling Clubs playdown, downing Dale Bullock of the Avo-nair 8-5 in the finals. i Jim Lait of St.

Albert won the other A final, edging Wayne Saboe of the Granite 7-6 in an extra end. "Leadership is the big differ-' ence," said Alexander. "There is 1 no conflict in calls. He feels like he'i a leader out there, so you let him do his job and you do yours. "We still have to play a little bit.

He has to see how ugly we can throw them sometimes." Reed, who hasn't curled competitively for a couple of seasons since opening a restaurant with brother-in-law Doug Johnston, joined the team as a spare player early in the season. "These guys were pretty good guys to get along with," Reed explained, saying the fact they were one of the last strong combrooms teams in the city had little to do with his decision. When third Don McKenzic jumped ship with the team's blessing to join Pat Ryan's rink in early November, Reed took over as full-time skip. "They had to do quite a bit of talking to get me to enter the play-downs," Reed said. "I wasn't too enthused to come in.

If you get going well. Alexander certainly thinks the team, which also qualified out of the A Event in last year's city playdown with Johnson skipping but bombed in the Northern Alberta playdown, is capable of reaching the provincial championship Feb. 3-7 at the Ottewell. have been curling twice a week in league play so it's not like last year when we had one guy who had played only six games," he said. Lait has added former skip Laurie Andrews at third this year and bumped Dan Holowaychuk to second, with Bob Cunningham playing lead.

Among the teams still alive in the Event entering Friday's late draw were former provincial finalist Ken Hunka of the Shamrock and 1987 playdown surprise Ken Gordon of the Shamrock. The finals will be played at 3 p.m. this afternoon at the Derrick. tle bit," he said. "I miss a few too many shots at skipping still.

Now I'm more relaxed. I've always been famous for missing early. It was due to nerves. I'm not doing that now." Meanwhile, Lait, who is seldom heard of until the playdowns, qualified out of the city for the third year in a row and fourth time overall. "I wish I could curl like that in the Northerns," said Lait, who has always curled well in the city playdown but never reached the provincials.

"We've been in four 'spiels and "Mark is a really good skip," Alexander said, "but Tom has got so much more experience and he's mentally tougher. Mark needed a year off to just throw the shots and not worry about the ice. "Tom's also a hell of a player. He can make those god-damn tough shots and not even think twice about it. Yeah, Tom is one hell of a player.

I'm glad he decided to play with us." And how does Johnson feel about being relegated to third? "Actually, I feel good about it. I have a lot of respect for Tom. Washington is in the middle of a Canada West tour, and Hogg feels that the Golden Bears will be the acid test for the Husky men's squad. Alberta is coining off of a dual meet against UBC last weekend where the Golden Bears collected a win, while the understaffed Pandas were defeated. The Pandas have experienced some dropout problems over the last two seasons, and put just seven swimmers on their roster, although as many as 18 are allowed.

Rookies Keltie Byrne and Donna McGinnis are international class swimmers, however, and produced a pair of first-place finishes apiece last week for the Pandas, currently ranked eighth in Canada. The Bears are led by Scott Flowers and Scott LeBuke who both put in strong performances last week. su'gery Dec 30 mdetmitely.
