10 Gneonto Star Sat, Feb. 13,1960 (If You've Been Sick Medical Costs Deductible (Tenth in Serin) The deduction for nxiraordinary medical expenses on State income tax returns is important to persons who have been burdened by heavy costs illness. The maximum deduction in the case of a husband and wife who file a joint return, or for a head of a household, is 52,500. The maximum for any other individual is 51.250. Activities of the association were shelved near the beginning ot World War Two. and have since remained dormant. R. DcGclleke. supervising principal, presided at the session and G.

Alumni attending (he meeting represented the clases of 1915.1916. same as the head of household definition for Federal tax purposes. As a general rule, if you were single at the close of your taxable year (or. if married, separated or living apart from your wife or husband) you will be considered the head of a household under any one of the following situations if: One.

You maintain a home for a closely related dependent for whom you are entitled to claim an exemption and who lives in your home for the entire year (if "the relative was born or died during the year, such person must have resided with you for that part of the year while he was alive). Two. You maintain a home which is the principal place of abode of unmarried son, stepson, daughter, or stepdaughter, or of one of descendants. If, however, such person is married, you will qualify as head of a household only if you are entitled to claim an exemption for him. Three.

You maintain a home for your dependent parent. In this case, it is not necessary that they live in your household. You will be considered to be head of a household if you furnish over half the cost of maintaining their separate home. METHOD OF COMPUTING When computing the medical deduction, you deduct medical expense in excess of three percent of the first $6,000 of net income plus five percent oi the. balance of net income, subject to the previously mentioned maximum deductions of $2,500 or 51,250, depending upon your status.

(Net income here means the amount of net income figured without the benefit of the medical deduction; that is, gross income less all other deductions.) But if you were 65 last year, or are blind, it is not necessary to reduce your medical expense by the percentages of net income. Instead you may deduct your entire medical i for 1959 subject only to the 52,500 and $1,250 maximums. This also applies to the filing of a joint return where either spouse is over 65 years of age" or is blind. EXAMPLES GIVEN No deduction may be taken in any case for medical expense for which the taxpayer has been compensated by insurance or other- rase. For those who are not over 65 or blind, figuring the medical duction may be a bit tricky.

Here's an example which may help you Husband and wife file a join return showing net income of $10 000 without the benefit of any medical deduction. Their medica bills during 1959 totalled $1,000. First, figure 3 per cent of the first $6,000 of net income. Tha amounts to $180. Next, figure 5 per cent of al net income over $6,000.

That 5 per cent of $4,000, or S200. Add the two items ($180 plu: $200) and you get S380. Now subtract this amount from the total medical bill less $3SO. The balance, $620, is the medical deduction on the ta return, if none of the expense was compensated for by insuranci or otherwise. If, in this case, 5200 was receiv ed from health insurance, tha would be subtracted from the S62C and the deductible amount woul be S420.

If a deduction is take) in one year and in a stibsequen year reimbursement of indemnitj is received from an insurance com pany, you must include such payments in your gross income ir the year received, to the exten the medical expense deduction in the prior year would have beer reduced had the payments been received in the year of the deduc tion. ALLOWABLE EXPENSE ITEMS On IT-201, space: are provided for computing you: medical deduction. See items 4i through 51, page 2 of the form and check information on page 7 of the official instructions. If you use the optional deductioi method 10 per cent of gros: income up to a maximum deduc tion of $1,000 in place of intern izing deductions, you are not al lowed to (ake any deduction for medical expense. In adding up your medical bills remember that are limitet lo expenses paid or incurred during the taxable year for medical can of Ihe laxpayer, his wife or a dependent.
