mg ALONG Katika on Team Chaffey Five Mad Wanted BigCourt Offered Niht Tilt WITH BOB WALTON While the season isn't over, the all-conference-team bug already has started to bite. His victim ia Harry Griffith, basketball coach at Riverside J.C., and this is the way he docs it: Forward Chet Katzka, San Bernardino. Forward Frank Wells, Riverside. Center Bob Doll, Chaffey. Guard Harold Rickert, Riverside.

Guard Earl Allison, Fullerton. Hmmm! Let's see, now, where Is Riverside In this conference race? Oh, yes, fifth. Simpson Sayi 'No' They say the Chaffey high school basketball contingent was mad enough to chew ground glass when the Cards of San Bernardino high made 'em play on the dinky, low- slung San Bernardino court last Friday. Chaffey begged, pleaded and otherwise tried to persuade the Cards to shift the game to the larger San Bernardino J.C. court.

They even offered to play the game at night, and when those daylight babies from Ontario agree to come out of their holes after dark, that is somethin'. But Ralph Simpson, the Cardinal coach, insisted that the game be held on the high school court and Chaffey could do nothing but agree. After all, that Is no more than fair. Of all the basketball courts, a team, naturally, can play best on its home floor. So you could hardly expect Simpson to give away an advantage like that.

Traynor on Coast Word comes in that Pie Tray nor, manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, is staying in Hollywood until the opening of the Bucco spring training camp in San Bernardino March 5. Traynor expects to visit San Bernardino in a day or two and light on the Pirate prospects for 1938 may be a little brighter at that time. Berglund Active This-a and that-a: Swede Berg lund will box Vic Nardoni in Hollywood late next month after he meets Al Hostak In Seattle March 1. George Rath, movie star, announced over radio the other night that he would visit the Pirate spring training' camp In San Bernardino. The crowd of 1,700 fans at the Colton-Chino basketball game last week-end was the largest ever to see a cage contest in the Tri-county league.

The Hollywood Coast league club, which trains In San Bernardino from March 20 to 30, will play Sacramento at Perris Hill park Wednesday, March 23. Doll Nears Scoring Title, Katzka Next Although all Eastern conference members except Citrus have yet to play their final games, Chaffey's gangly Bob Doll has virtually clinched individual scoring honors for 1938 beyond a doubt. His total of 92 points for an average of 1S.4 per game leads the pack by a wide margin, since San Bernardino's Chet Katzka and Santa Ana's Cy Leivermann, deadlocked for second, have scored 63 each. Fullerton's Tom Keesey is fourth with 56 and Riverside's Wilbur Crystal" and Fullerton's Andy Echle are tied for fifth with 53. Eastern conference scoring leaders follow: Player Pts. 24, Manager Bill Killefer of the Sacramento Solons, today returned from San Francisco with the signed contracts of three of his baseball players. They are Joe Orengo, shortstop; Bud Hafey, outfielder, and Bill Schmidt, pitcher. Orengo was the regular shortstop for the Solons during most of last season and Schmidt won 15 games and lost 11 as moundsman here In 1937. Hafey played for Montreal in the International league last season. The Solons now have 11 players under contract.

The pitchers and catchers will report at Elsinore springs next Monday for a week of conditioning. The rest of the squad will start work at Riverside March 7. Killefer will be in charge of a rookie camp next week at Riverside. a free "sight-seeking" trip to the Rose Bowl by one California school, now decorates the campus (and spring practice) of a rival California coll itch Chance to Enter Cage fr If Coach Doug Smythe steer his Braves into a victory over the second-place Panthers, San Bernar dino will stand a fairly good chance of stepping into the conference championship series with Fullerton. I The series, deciding the title, is held annually between the first and second teams.

CONFERENCE STANDING Pet. The Dons, like the Braves, also are in a postoin to move into the title series providing they triumph over Riverside this week-end. However, should San Bernardino beat Chaffey and Santa Ana defeat Riverside, that would put teams in a tie for second place, necessitating a special playoff, whereas if the Indians trip Chaffey and Riverside beats the Dons, San Bernardino would automatically enter the plavoff. INDIANS UNDERDOGS 'San Bernardino goes into its game with Chaffey tonight definitely the underdog.

Beaten only once, and then by Fullerton, the Chaffey Panthers have a team that Is second In pow er to Fullerton. Built around th sensational basket tossing of Center Bob Doll, the leading conference scorer, Chaffey should win over the Indians. However, Coach Smythe's Braves displayed above-average form last week in defeating Chaffey, so there is a possibility of an upset. San Bernardino's main problem will be to stop Doll. That task will rest on the shoulders of Bill Mat- thie and Ralph Reynolds, the two Indian guards.

It will be, no easy task, though for no team has succeeded in doing it yet. DON'T FORGET KATZKA That will leave Capt. Chet Katzka, Sammy Strano and Chuck Hunting the task of scoring points Katzka, leading conference scorer last year, has been watched closely this year and his total is not as high as in 1937, However, Katzka is about due for one of his extended scoring sprees, in which capacity he is quite capable of matching Doll shot for shot. The game is scheduled to start at 8 p. m.
