THE EDMONTON JOURNAL, Friday October 3, 1986 D9 Leisure Orf ord lives Up to reputation Jimmy Stewart joins fray over tinting as a world-class string quartet Orf ord Siring Quartet SUB Theatre "This is a film that is seen every Christmas in America and no one should see it other than the way Frank and (cinematographer) Joe Walker wanted it to be seen," Stewart said. Joining Stewart at the American Film Institute were a dozen directors and cinematographers who oppose Turner Broadcasting System's plan to color 1 00 black-and-white movie classics. "You cannot remake a movie simply by giving it a new paint job, but you can easily destroy one," Spielberg, an AFI trustee, added in a letter. LOS ANGELES (AP) Actor Jimmy Stewart has joined director Steven Spielberg and others in denouncing computer coloring of black-and-white movie classics. Many directors claim the coloring process "tolls the death knell" for an art form.

Stewart told a news conference Wednesday of his affection for the 1946 classic It's a Wonderful Life, a recently colored black-and-white film in which he starred. He said director Frank Capra tried in vain to prevent color tampering. mil TO OUR 8687 i 'TP) 'I it VI A it a ill ttfi-L i if Tffffr 1 By MAIRI MacLEAN Journal Staff Writer It was an intense, cerebral evening at SUB Theatre Wednesday, as the Orford String Quartet performed an all-Beethoven program before an enthusiastic, near-capacity crowd. And with an assured performance of a demanding program, the Orford easily retains its heavyweight title as Canada's world-class quartet The players take a sober, conservative, almost understated approach to their collective interpretation. And why not? After all, they're Canadian, eh? This is an ensemble which will not stoop to cheap pyrotechnical displays, no matter how tempting it might be to drift into the cloying, fizzy sweetness available to strings.

Indeed, these are gentlemen with honor, with a whole lot of musical integrity, and who hold an obvious love and respect for their material. But above all, they're team players. Violinists Andrew Dawes and Kenneth Perkins are so well syn-cronized that in emotional moments they tilt their heads at the same angle and breathe as one. Do these guys dream the same dreams when they're sleeping? It wouldn't be surprising, given the fact that they've played together for more than two decades. In the second movement adagio where the parts were more exposed, the cello seemed pitchy for an instant or two, but solidarity was quickly regained. The work moved on to a spirited, sprightly scherzo which was charmingly embellished, and it finished up with an allegro movement chock full of virtuosic runs where the notes sped by at seemingly a million per minute. The second work was the Op. 135 in a late quartet which was never performed in concert during Beethoven's lifetime.

Again, the cello seemed a bit intrusive at times, as if Denis Brott was working with a heavier bow than his partners. The second movement showed moments of thrilling fusion, while strangely, the end of the slow third movement didn't quite manage to galvanize into the throbbing, resonatingly good tuning one expects from the Orford.
