D2 THE EDMONTON JOURNAL, Wednesday, June 29, 1983 City Announcements Deaths 30 Deaths 30 Calgary man is denied bail after letter threatens Games By WAYNE KONDRO CALGARY On the basis of an "ambiguous" letter, a Calgary man has been denied bail for fear he'll commit terrorist acts at the World University Games in Edmonton. Police discovered the letter, which may have been written by another man, in Dragomir Gheorgag's residence after arresting him Friday because the Romanian government requested his extradition. Gheorgag, who has landed immigrant status, allegedly planned to send the letter to the Romanian government in an attempt to have his sister obtain a passport so she could emigrate to Canada. The letter states that unless his sister receives an exit visa, "I will see to it that at Universiade Edmonton '83 the Romanian delegation will have some bad times." It adds "I want justice and if you won't do it I will do it alone at any price." Court of Queen's Bench Judge William Brennan refused bail Tuesday on the basis Gheorgag is a threat to public peace. "I'm afraid if we turn this man loose he may cause real problems." After the hearing another man, Alex Constantinescu, claimed he wrote the letter for Gheorgag.

He said in an interview the language used was necessary "because that's the only way to deal with Romania. That's the only way to get our wives and children here." The court reconvened and Brennan was told Constantinescu wrote the letter. "How do we know that?" Brennan asked. "It was found in his (Gheorgag's) apartment. It expressed his intentions.

I've made my decision." Federal Crown Prosecutor Winston Fogarky said Gheorgag is wanted in Romania on charges of embezzlement and automobile theft. Gheorgag, a mechanic, defected from Romania in 1979. Defence lawyer Charles Stewart told court that in a telephone conversation last month, Gheorgag was speaking to his sister when "members of the Romanian state security" interrupted the call. "Gheorgag told them he would demonstrate," Stewart said. "He didn't suggest any violent acts." 'Caring9 principal honored ANDERSON, Eric Gustav On June 28, 1983, Mr.

Taxi driver took robber to police An Edmonton taxi driver took her fare to the police station when he tried to rob her last June, court heard Tuesday. Crown Prosecutor Lloyd Nelson said Reola Daniel refused to be intimidated by Ralph Brian Skelding when he held a pellet gun to her neck. Skelding, 21, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and was sentenced by Court of Queen's Bench Justice R.P.

Foisy to 30 months in prison. Court heard the robber tried to escape when the taxi stopped at the Londonderry police station. The Skyline Cabs driver wrestled the gun away and hailed two officers. Foisy also prohibited Skelding from owning or carrying weapons for 10 years. 7 In a scene reminiscent of To Sir With Love, former Kennedale School students shed tears and shared memories about the inspiration of principal Bill Rollans.

Monday was Bill Rollans Day in the school housed in the Youth Development Centre, Alberta's most restrictive juvenile institution. Rollans is leaving the school at 13120 34th which teaches Alberta's convicted juvenile offenders, to pursue his doctorate at the University of Alberta. About 300 people filled the school gymnasium to give presents and compliments to Rollans, at the school for 13 years. The school is run by the Edmonton public board for the Social Services and Community Health Department. Up Where We Belong, the song from the movie An Officer and A Gentleman, was performed by two students.

Before she was overcome with tears, one former student, now a mother of seven, thanked Rollans for being such a supportive father figure. Another former student, now a personnel director of a local business, said it was Rollans who put her on the right path. Rollans was described by students, teachers and social services officials as compassionate, caring, patient, terrific, special, one of a kind, remarkable, humanitarian and positive. "I've learned more from Bill than anyone else," said Ernie Homeniuk, Westfield principal. "I can't see why he's going to university, he's got it all." Rollans said he was overwhelmed by the party, especially when he saw former students at the head table.

"I feel I should be honoring every one of you," he told the crowd. He commended former students for their "courage to move ahead to put behind the problems that seemed very large at the time. "This is not something I can walk away from easily at all. "Thanks for being you it's been a most satisfying and rewarding experience," he concluded to a standing ovation. John was skipping his Edmonton Canada 1 committee yacht under Lions Gate Bridge last weekend when the Kahlea ran out of fuel.

The boat was only 30 metres off the rocks when Tom Pontin, John Wilmot, Cort Smith and Al Keefe rigged sails and escaped. But a harbor patrol vessel steamed up and told them it was forbidden to travel under sail in the harbor. When John explained the predicament, the nice patrol guys towed the Kahlea to a floating gas station. I think it very unfair that some of John's mutinous crew now refer to him as Capt. Highhner.

FOR HARRY, England and St. George! Where are you Englishmen, strong and true? Your help is urgently wanted. The Alberta St. George of England Society is in danger of not lighting one of 41 ethnic community fires to mark the start of Universiade. The society will have lumber delivered but needs help in stacking it. Remember how our ancestors built bonfires to warn of the Spanish Armada? Let's get out there and do it again. Call Philip now (Days: 462-8334. Evenings: 463-0446) KM? I SAW the pink elephant for the first time in the west end. When I spotted it later at the legislature grounds, I thought I needed help.

But they scoffed at me in the office. "It's your buddies in the 435 Hercules Squadron," photographer Jim Cochrane told me. "They kidnapped it in Ontario." American exchange officer Capt. Frank Marlow told me the elephant was the Trenton-based 436 Hercules Squadron's mascot. "It was taken from their orderly room under the cover of darkness," he told me.

"It weighs 200 pounds and it took four guys to carry it. The police still haven't figured how we did it." The elephant was painted flourescent pink and, Tuesday, posed for photos in Big E.
