That's because Dec. 3 marks 15 years of continuous set-vice as the anchorman for CTVs 1 1 p.m. national news. Just in terms of longevity that makes the 50-year-old Ontario native Canada's equivalent to Walter Cronkite. In a sense, Harv's seen it all the fall of John Diefenbak-er, the rise of Pierre Trudeau, the deaths of Martin Luthef Kins and Bobby Kennedy, the funeral of Sir Winston Y'vette Mimieux.

"It'd get pretty boring alright if you just picked it (the news) up and read it." Harv began his career as an announcer with a Sault Ste.

Marie radio station. He later worked as a radio reporter operating from the Toronto Telegram building, eventually linking up with CFTOTV, CTV's Toronto affiliate. Although Harv likes to keep a low profile, he rather enjoys his celebrity status. "I know it goes with the job. Like anyone going into your home regularly, after 15 years I become pretty much a part of your routine, a personality, an acceptable guest." When he's recognized in public "nobody ever calls me Mr.

Kirck. It's Harvey." He said TV is the kind of medium where "you can put a talking dog on for five years and he'd be as big a star as anybody." Heck, I should hope so. If they could do it for My Mother the Car, Mr. Ed and Francis the Talking Mule, they should be able to do it for a dog. Harv admitted he doesn't "come on gangbusters" when he reads the news.

"I don't come on with star quality or charisma or whatever it is that some people have. "But once I'm there, whatever I have going for me goes well with the audience. I think I wear well." At this stage, Harv hasn't prepared any future plans. He separated from his wife of some 20 years two years ago and now resides in a Toronto suburb. He's the father of a 17-year-old boy and an 1 1-year-old girl.

Right now "I'm very comfortable and enjoying myself." He said he has no political ambitions: "I don't think I'm built for that kind of thing the debating, the acceptance of a party line. I think I'd go crazy as a backbencher." "The only problem (with announcing) is that 1 1 p.m. seems to be later and later with each passing year." you'd like to see the telecast pushed ahead then? Harv chuckled. "I would love it. If we did a supper cast, I'd stay here until I was 100." That's only 50 years away, Harv.

In the meantime, happy anniversary. THANK GOODNESS CBXT is taping only two more instalments of The Original Caste Show. Not because the music is bad or the production is sloppy. That stuff is quite good, in fact. No, the big problem is the show's location.

With the well-publicized budget cuts taking hold, producer-director Ron Mullins has had to move the production out of SUB Theatre and into CBCs 75th Street studios. SUB, where two shows were taped, has nice comfortable chairs with backs; the studio has a small stack of uncomfortable bleachers. I attended the taping of two shows recently (a total of eight will be aired) and stood' in line with the crowd for nearly 20 minutes before being admitted to a hot, small studio. While I was escorted to a chair in the control booth, the rest of the audience was jammed into the bleachers for a stop-start taping session that lasted over three hours. By 11:15 p.m.

the applause was getting a little weak. Faces were haggard. It was The Agony and The Agony. AS OF JAN. 1, 1979, CFRN-FM will be known will be known as CKXM-FM.

This alteration in call letters however, doesn't signal a change in programming, explained Ddvid Nevett, CFRN's assistant manager. It's being done' to distinguish the FM band from CFRN's AM and television wings. Mr. Nevett said the new letters were chosen essentially for their availability At the same time, he did note they could stand for the station's commitment to "excellent music." Do ya get it? Huh? Pun-pun, nudge-nudge, acronym. NO NEWS IS PROBABLY bad news for the small cable companies protesting a recent licensing decision in favor of Edmonton's QCTV Ltd.

The federal cabinet was expected to consider their appeal last week but nothing has been announced officially. If they lose, then QCTV president Ed Polanski can begin to freely service the 23 communities awarded him by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications (CRTQ two months ago. Yule workshops planned The Edmonton Art Gallery will offer four Christmas Workshops for children (ages 4-6) and adults. Each workshop runs for 6 days, from Dec. 5-7 and 12-14.
