Mrs. Cant said she didn't know the full situation, but her son told them about a previous manager being held hostage last Christmas. RCMP said an armed robbery at the store took place last December. A young offender was convicted of armed robbery and break, enter and theft. An abduction charge was dropped.

"He (James) was hoping to improve the situation," she said. "He was looking forward to continuing to improve relations through the store." Cant cared for the people living in the northern community, she said. "He wanted to see a way the natives could keep a pride in their culture." When he phoned his parents, Cant was excited. Tompkins's son, Michael Mosher, is in critical condition at the University of Alberta Hospital, with a heart enlarged to three times its normal size. Transplant centres across North America have been alerted to the 20-year-old Burnaby man's desperate need for a new heart. He's been waiting for 2lh weeks and time is running out. Tompkins describes her son as a quiet person who keeps things to himself. Rather than bother his parents, he even drove himself to the hospital twice when he was feeling ill.

The first indication of trouble came when they failed to return to Fort Liard at the scheduled time of 9 p.m., he said. Carlton said the pilot was a local man but he didn't know who the three passengers were. Insp. Lome Wagner of Yel-lowknife RCMP said the terrain where the helicopter went down is rugged.

He said few details on the crash were available because no word had come yet from searchers who went to the re-, mote site. The Cants said their son also worked for a while in Grand and Toy Limited store in West Edmonton Mall before returning recently to the Hudson's Bay Co. George Whitman, manager of public relations for Hudson's Bay said everyone in the company is in a state of shock. "This is a great trauma, not only for Jim Cant's parents but for all other rural store managers and for all of us in the company attempting to provide a service in the North," Whitman said. "We've lost a valuable, young store manager, and a family in (New Brunswick) has lost a 22-year-old son," said Bruce Cromb, personnel manager for the company's northern stores.

"He's a smart, bright, stoic young man," says Dr.

Rick Bernstein, the resident affiliated with the hospital's heart transplant team. Bernstein can't say how much longer Mosher has nor what kind of life he can expect if he does get the needed organ. "But without the transplant, he'll die," says the doctor. Four other Albertans are awaiting heart transplants and two need heart and lung transplants. mother is confused and she would like to talk with the mother. "All the information would be kept confidential. We just want to make the best plans possible for this little guy." McCaig said that without the mother's consent, adoption of the baby must go through the courts. However, there would be no problem if the mother wished to keep her child, she added. Social services have taken custody of David, who will be released from the hospital in about a week.

If no news is received from the mother he will be put in a foster home under a one-month temporary guardianship and then per manent arraneements will be made. "It's very important to ensure that a healthy young baby has the vital attachment of a family of his own as soon as possible," Stanley said. Social Services has published a number for information on the mother, but so far most of the calls have been adoption requests. "It's a little bit scary (for the mother) right now, but when ever ything dies down I'm sure we'll hear something, McCaig said. The audited report, approved Tuesday night in a meeting of the symphony board of directors, shows operating losses declined to $168,202 from the previous year's total of $488,942.

"A 47-per-cent increase in fund- raising by the Edmonton Symphony during the season just com pleted has started the financial turnaround," Hetherington said in a news release. Hetherington said fund-raising activities provided revenues of $672,884 up from the $459,085 of the season before. "To have achieved such a significant increase when the city's economy is in a downturn speaks volumes about both the volunteer efforts and community support for the orchestra, Hetherington said The symphony president is also optimistic about eliminating the $1,006,988 deficit within the next two years through a planned en dowment program. The proposed endowment pro gram would enable the symphony to convert a conditional loan of $349,844 into a grant and become eligible for further funding up to $600,000 from the Alberta Performing Arts Foundation. By MELISSA MONTEITH Journal Staff Writer A baby found abandoned in the Red Deer Hospital is safe, but social workers still have no information on the mother and are worried about her health.

"We know the baby is in good hands, but the mother could be suffering from (post-birth depression)," spokesman John Stanley said Wednesday. The 5Vi-pound newborn baby, named David Doe by social services officials, was discovered in a hospital washroom Monday. Offi-cals are appealing to his mother to come forward. She will not face charges. "I think because of the circumstances and the obvious care taken (in leaving the baby) she won't be charged.

I think if the baby was left in a bus station washroom, however, the police would take a different view," Stanley said. Stanley said the woman may have left her baby out of desperation. "It could have been a case where her husband was abusing her or (the pregnancy) may have been out of wedlock." Connie McCaig, a child welfare supervisor, said she is sure the A helicopter with four people aboard has crashed in rugged terrain near Fort Liard in the Northwest Territories. RCMP could not confirm if anyone survived. Searchers were trying to reach the crash site, about 80 km northwest of Fort Liard.

The Bell 206 helicopter took off Tuesday night from Fort Liard to go on a local flight, said John Carlton, one of the owners of Precision Helicopters of Grande Prairie, which operated the flight.
