J'fT) i XT rim --iljjli-' 1 One hundred years ago, Karl Benz putt-putted through the streets of Mannheim, Germany, in his gasoline-powered three-wheeler which most historians accept as the first true automobile. Daimler-Benz, the company that grew from that humble origin, has gone on to make quite a name for itself. Conservative by nature, Daimler-Benz makes Mercedes-Benz automobiles which are soundly engineered, solidly built, safe as church, and frightfully expensive. Yet they are starting to shed some of that conservative image. A couple of years ago they introduced the 190E (gas) and 190D (Diesel) compact sedans.

By Mercedes standards, their styling was decidedly radical, but the cars have been smash hits, especially in Germany where BMW had previously dominated the small sports sedan class. For 1986, Daimler-Benz will sell 11 models in Canada nine sedans and one station wagon, built on three platforms, designated W201, W124 and W126 stands for "Wagen," the German word for car); plus the venerable SL Roadster (R107). Three models are all-new, one is mostly new, and all but one of the rest have new, more powerful engines. It is the biggest single-year model change in Mercedes history. The gas-engined W201, sold as the 190E, is the least changed.

Its Diesel-powered brother, the 190D 2.5, gets a new 2.5 litre five-cylinder engine. The entire engine compartment is sealed with insulation to isolate both passengers and passers-by from the characteristic diesel noise. The attempt is only partly successful you know it's a diesel the minute you fire it up. But the 93 horsepower engine provides considerably better performance than last year's 2.2 litre four. The "mostly new" car is the 190E 2.3-16.

This W201 -series sedan is decked out in "Euro-style" sports sedan trim, with rocker panel side skirts, a deep front air dam, and a trunk-mounted wing. The engine is a double-overhead camshaft, four-valve-per-cylinder upgrade of the 190E's 2.3 litre four. One hundred and sixty seven horsepower pass through a five-speed gearbox with a PICTURE: Ken Orr "racing-style" shift pattern first is to the left and back, with 2nd through 5th in the If you like your performance in a more conservative vein, move a few feet down the Mercedes showroom floor and check out the 300E, one of the three all-new W124 cars. These look very much like the 190, only one size larger. The three-litre six-cylinder gasoline engine generates 177 horsepower, and the car is available with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.

A comparison to the sportier-looking 190E 2.3-16 shows that the 300E is roomier, is much more comfortable, is faster 0-60, has a higher top speed, gets better fuel economy, and you'd need a professional driver and a race track to determine any differential in handling capability between the two. And, the 300E is $4,500 cheaper. This is some car, and I hope to be able to report to you in more detail on it soon. The second W124 car will be available in January. It's called the 300D Turbo, and is essentially the same as the 300E but with a three-litre six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine.

It is easily the quietest and fastest diesel car I have ever driven, with a 0 to 60 m.p.h. time of 11.5 seconds better than most gas-engined sedans. I still cannot figure out why anybody who lays out over $45,000 for a car should care a whit about fuel economy, but at least the 300D Turbo extracts far fewer compromises than any other diesel car. The third member of the 124 family The new 300E is faster, roomier and cheaper than its sporty cousin, the 16-valve the company has made more changes for '86 than ever before in its history is a station wagon which will join the fold sometime next spring. The W126, or "S-class" sedans, set new standards for passengers cars when they were introduced just a few years ago.

Yet now they are the oldest five-passenger cars Mercedes makes. Four models are available; the 300SDL uses nearly the same three-litre turbodiesel as the 300D Turbo; the 420SEL has a 4.2 litre 201 horsepower V8; the 560SEL and 560SEC. coupe both get a mighty 5.5 litre 238 horse V8. The long-lived Mercedes couperoadster has been dubbed the Beverly Hills Grocery-Getter. It is now the Beverly Hills Hot-Rod, since it too gets a 5.5 litre V8 engine with 227 horsepower this year.

Corvette owners, keep your heads up. Whenever I listen to Mercedes engineers talk about the safety aspects of their cars, I always feel guilty about letting my wife and kids ride around in anything else. Mercedes concentrates on "active safety," i.e. providing outstanding handling and features like anti-lock brakes to help avoid accidents in the first place. But they also stress "passive safety" decreasing the risk of injury should an accident occur.

Mercedes pioneered progressive crushability of the body structure, and even designs the front end of their cars so as to pose less risk to pedestrians and cyclists. For 1986, all Mercedes models get a "supplemental restraint system." In a severe frontal crash, an air-bag on the driver's side inflates automatically to protect the driver's head from hitting the steering wheel. At the same time, the front seat belts tighten, further reducing injury potential. Air-bags by themselves are a dim-bulb idea, but with seat belts they provide an extra margin of safety, albeit at a price that only Mercedes owners can afford. Toronto Star Syndicate Drunk-driving lesson sparks cab fare card Firth says that throughout the experience, he tried to find some meaning, some way he could end his guilt and help others.

Three years ago he came up with a plan. He's been plugging away ever since on a seemingly simple idea: a credit card for taxi fares. He calls his company and the card Important but Impaired. "When I got in that accident, I learned the lesson about not drinking and driving. But I also knew that if I'd had access to another form of transportation I wouldn't have driven that night," he says.

"Basically, that's what this card does it offers another form of transportation." He says the card is ideal for people who enjoy a night out on the town. "We're not telling anybody to stop drinking. They can go out and enjoy themselves at the bars, have a good time. All we want to do is stop drinking and driving." He says the card is also ideal for, say, a girl riding with a friend to a bar. That friend may get impaired and the card Let's start this week with a wee bit o' the Irish automotive trivia.

Perhaps the best-known car to be manufactured in Ireland was the ill-fated Delorean, the labor of love of an ill-fated man with the same name. There is another, however, and it's heading to Canada. Can you name it? Read on for the answer. But first, some news about a man and his new product designed to make the roads safer. SIX YEARS ago, David Firth of Edmonton was in a serious automobile accident.

His 1977 Camaro was written off and the car he hit was heavily damaged. Luckily, Firth and the driver of the other car were not injured. Firth was especially fortunate because, he says, he had been drinking heavily that night. He was charged with impaired driving. He automatically lost his licence and because he drove for a living, he also lost his job.

Years later, financial strain that was directly attributable to the impaired charge cost him his marriage and his family. parents would gladly pay cab aiure to get their kids home safely after a night at the local pub. Even after three years of hard work, however, Firth's taxi cab credit card hasn't reached fruition. He's in negotiation with the taxi company officials and with bar owners, who he hopes will distribute credit card1 application forms. His plan is to sell an annual membership fee for about $20, which will include the card and a quarterly newsletter.

He says the card will be easier to qualify for than most credit cards, so young people can be included. He plans to charge 24 per cent interest a year, but no service charge if a bill is paid within 30 days. Because Imporant but Impaired is a company which is designed to make a profit some day, Firth says groups like the police and the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAQ can't endorse the idea. But I bet both groups are pulling for David Firth; the idea seems to have merit. Many people simply don't have the cab fare on diem after a night in the bar, but with a credit card, those people might just grab a cab.

Firth says he's not out to make a million bucks with Important but Impaired, but I for one hope he does. If David Forth becomes a millionaire, it will mean that many impaired people are using his card instead of crawling behind the wheel of a car; it will mean the roads will be a little safer and it will mean you and I will be able to sleep a little more soundly those nights when one of our family members is later than we expected. AND THE answer to to the Irish trivia question is the TMC Costin. The two-plus-two sports car is manufactured by Ireland's sole auto maker, Thompson Manufacturing. According to the trade magazine Automotive News, five of the cars have been exported to Canada and the company is hoping to sell 50 units in the Great White North each year.

Scott McKeen could provide safe transportation home for both of them. The name of the card comes from Firth's belief that everyone, impaired or not, is important to someone. For that reason, he thinks parents will be interested in getting an Important but Impaired card for their He's probably right.
