B6 Alberta THE EDMONTON JOURNAL, Tuesday, December 18, 984 Hanukkah originated in defiance, faith R. Glenn Martin i "m0 and non-religious families observe the festival. The miracle, Dr. David Hart-man said in an article for the Jewish Star two years ago, was as much that the candle was lit when there was not enough oil to keep it going, as that the oil lasted eight days. Hanukkah, a word which means "dedication" in Hebrew, expresses a willingness to live without certainty, or even to flout the odds where purity and truth are at stake, Hartman said.

It also sug gests one should do what one can, even if it seems inadequate. "One ought to pour infinite yearnings even into small vessels. Only lamps that are lit may continue to bum beyond their anticipated life-span," Hart-man said. Hanukkah is celebrated with a nine-candle menorah. The central candle, known as the sham ash or servant, is used the first night to light one other candle.

Each night, an additional candle is lit until on the eighth night all the candles are lit. only one tin of consecrated oil to light the candlestick. However, rather than wait until more oil could be prepared, they decided to light the candlestick with the oil they had, which was sufficient to last for only one day. Miraculously, it lasted for eight days, long enough to be replenished by new oil. Long celebrated as a minor family festival, Hanukkah has assumed greater importance in recent years as an assertion of Jewish identity at the same time of the Business: friend or enemy? By PAUL DE GROOT Journal Staff Writer If there is a ritual that best expresses the value of tradition, it may well be Hanukkah, which begins tonight.

For 2,149 years, Jews have commemorated a seemingly minor event: the lighting of a single candle in 165 B.C. It was an act of both defiance and faith. Three years earlier, Syrian leader Antiochus Epiphanes had ordered swine sacrificed in the temple thus defiling it and promised the death penalty to any who continued to observe Jewish customs. His intention was to wipe out Judaism completely. But one Jew, Mattathias, mobilized opposition to the sacrilege and his son, Judas Maccabaeus, routed the Syrians.

The temple was recovered but Judas and his followers could find year as Christmas. Today, even some Christian Of -if businessmen) to "have more influence." He describes "the frightened chaos of the marketplace," contrasting it with a statement by the director of the International Labor Organization that "human needs must shape the economy and not be subordinated to it." Goble says that "the marketplace will do its efficient best to delude and corrupt young people," and that "education is not the art of training and subjugating people to serve the profit of others." The debate is old. Mr.

Goble wants education to keep itself chastely aloof from commercial taint, even though the giant industry of educational materials (buildings, texts, supplies, equipment) cohabits in prosperous symbiosis with the untainted profession. Mr. Harrison is rather more cordial to educators than Mr. Goble is to businessmen. RECEIVERSHIP SALE THE WALLCOVERING MART LTD.

Opposite views are offered by Russell Harrison, chairman of the Bank of Commerce, and Norman Goble, head of an international group of teacher organizations, writing in the current issue of the ATA Magazine. Harrison argues for a closer linkage between industry and our schools to benefit both. He quotes the quip that "Canada has the best educated unemployed work force in the world" with masses of young people who are "well-educated" but seem "totally unequipped to enter the work force." He does not expect schools to train students for specific jobs, since most industries have training systems of their own, but he does want students to come out of school with "basic skills and knowledge" and "a positive attitude and understanding toward the private sector." He questions whether "the attitudes of the classroom are preparing students adequately" for the work place. He sees areas of possible "positive partnership" between educators and business.

Norman Goble's comments, reflecting sentiments common in the teaching profession, are far more rhetorical. Goble sees education as a counterweight to lack of morality in the profit motive of business. He speaks of a "rabble of clamorous competitors, jostling and arguing, and all claiming that their goals should be paramount, that their profit is the well-spring of human progress." He writes of the "grim state of the world economy" and suggests that it is "a hair-raising risk" for "the authors of this mischief" (i.e., K. lj LI A I I i Vinyl's, Prepastsd, Unpasted, Grasscloth, Murals, Residential Commercial Best-Near Receiver Manager for the Wallcovering Mart is selling the inventory at substantial savings to the consumer. Perhaps the best contribution to the debate is from Tim Johnston, the magazine's teacher-editor. He reports sending his junior high kids some years ago to visit and briefly work in local businesses and industries, where he found "a huge pool of goodwill." The kids learned vital things about the economy of their community and nation and about work habits and attitudes. After the high-level debates fade from memory, it's kids like Tim Johnston's who will finally settle the issue.
